Monitor Preference

Featured Replies

Hi all !Just wondering what your preferences are concerning traditional monitors (cathodic tube) vs. flat panel LCD monitors.I currently have a traditional 19" monitor but am thinking about a major system upgrade. Should I get a new monitor as well (probably a 20" LCD) or are the visuals better on a traditional screen.Of course, flat panels have a great advantage in that they are less bulky. But is the image as good ?Interested to hear your experience...Good landings to all,L

Hi,I recently went from a 19" CRT to an 18.1" LCD, and the difference is amazing. The LCD is a great monitor, alot better than my CRT, plus it has a greater screen size.Dan.

I've never LCD's that are as fast as CRT's, at least as for as gaming goes. So for me, I'll be with CRT's for a while (besides, for an 18", you're talking about $250 vs $500 here!)

Yeah, they are a little more expensive, but as for the speed thing, there is no way you could notice the the LCD I have is any slower than a CRT.Dan.

I've been using a NEC FE1250+ 22" crt that I got earlier in the year. Been very happy with it.

Exactly what I am planning ;Existing Sony 19" CRT 1024x768 , Refreshing 100 Hz and secondary Philips 15" 1024 x768, refreshing 75 Hz Graphic Card ATI Radeon 9800 Pro , 128 DDRI have No Space on my table , therefore I am planning to have a new 18" or 19" LCD and to give a way my Sony CRT.Can you pls tell me;Is that the clever thing to do ?Can I get such a good Refresh Rate with LCD as on Primary Monitor in Flight Simulation ?Does this change give any harm to my simulation quality ?( Frame Rates / Stutterings etc. during the sim )All kind of help , exchanging ideas are welcome..RgdsHasanLTBA

>Is that the clever thing to do ?In my opinion yes>Can I get such a good Refresh Rate with LCD as on Primary>Monitor in Flight Simulation ?Of course, I was a little worried before I brought my one, but I am glad I did, it has a very very good refresh rate.>Does this change give any harm to my simulation quality ?(>Frame Rates / Stutterings etc. during the sim )Not at all, you are just changing the monitor, this will have no effects on anything like framerate, stutters etcDan

But Why then there is a general tendency for CRT monitors which gives better performance compared to LCD's !What brand and model would be the best to buy LCD, especially for Simulation and to be used as primary ?thanks fyr kind inforgdshasan

for your replies.I am now in a much better position to make a decision on this topic... which is exactly what I hoped for.Good landings,L

>But Why then there is a general tendency for CRT monitors>which gives better performance compared to LCD's !>>What brand and model would be the best to buy LCD, especially>for Simulation and to be used as primary ?>thanks fyr kind infoHi,Where did you get this information about performance?, I can't see why there would be any difference in performance, and I certainly have not noticed any.LCD monitors USED to have problems "keeping up" with the image but that is all gone now, I see no reason not to get an LCD, apart from the price obviously ;).As for the brand, I can only go by my one, its an LG, not sure what model, but it is a very good monitor and also very competitivly priced.Dan.

Hii Dan,So ; As far as I understood from all yr words that if I use LCD as my primary monitor then I will have same Frame Rates during Take Off & Landings as my usual CRT and no Stutterings during this period..Can you get about 100 Hz at 1024x768 resolution ?Sorry keep you asking but I really want to be sure because I will sell my CRT and buy LCD ..Note : I hv tested FS2004 on my Dell note book 15" TFT with other additional secondary LCD philips monitor and so far Dell has done perfect job, If the new LCD 18" or 19 " would give same performance as Dell did , then I will be happy at all.. All my besthasan

>>So ; As far as I understood from all yr words that if I use>LCD as my primary monitor then I will have same Frame Rates>during Take Off & Landings as my usual CRT and no Stutterings>during this period..You will get exactly the same performance with a CRT and an LCD, there is nothing in putting a differnet monitor that will change anything to do with framerates, if you dont have framerate and stutters now, you will not have with another monitor>Can you get about 100 Hz at 1024x768 resolution ?On a CRT monitor you run the highest refresh rate possible to eliminate the screen flicker (which causes eye strain and headaches) due to he way CRT monitors work.LCD monitors do not work this way, they are flicker free no matter what (its one of the good points of an LCD monitor), my monitor runs at 1280x1024 at 75hz, totally flicker free, so there is no need to run the refresh rate any higher.Dan.

LCD monitors are more expensive and they suffer from a draw-in problem because of no refresh rates.CRT monitors are the best for games, I have a 21" Sony Trinitron monitor (best 600 bucks I ever spent) and have not looked back ever since. For the same price as mine you can get a 17 LCD that when you play certain games that move the camera around fast, you can see the blurry textures because of the low refresh rates on the LCD monitors.Get a Sony or Viewsonic CRT. They take up more space but they are worth it, at least if you play games other than flight sim.

Hii DanAlex here says ; Blurry textures on LCD monitors due to low refresh rates compared to CRT !!If I have 18" or 19 " LCD with lowest 16 ms , will I face with blurry textures or keeping up many images next to the first one ?RgdsHasan
