Fastest Aircraft?

Featured Replies

I usually don't have a lot of time to fly on VATSIM, so I am wondering which is the fastest turboprop airplane currently in service by airlines? Dash 8? ATR?Also, is Boeing 747 the fastest jetliner?Talking about in optimal cruise altitudes.

Hi,I can't comment on the turboprops as I don't fly them in the sim, but as far as the 747-400 goes, yes I believe it is still the fastest sub sonic passenger jet flying the skies. The typical cruise speed for this giant is between Mach .84 and .86Regards,Van LatendresseYeoDesigns/AFG GroupPanel/FDE Designer

I've been flying turboprops very long and can without doubt say that the Dash 8 is the fastest of them all and especially the Q400.Then propobly the ATR and Fokker 50.http://vatsim.pilotmedia.fi/statusindicato...or=SVA1&a=a.jpg

The Citation X will get you around as fast as anything sub sonic and cruises at a higher altitude than most anything non military. It's not a turboprop of course but a lot more fun to fly than a 747 IMHO. Don't know if there are any around yet for FS9 but there are for FS2002.David

Also the Citation X can fly as high as 51,000 feet and can fly up to mach .91

The fastest airliner that you can fly would be the B707..as is possibly faster than the business jets. The 707/dc-8's have great higher altitude speed. The best models you can find in these types are at the Historic Jet Group.....great airplanes!!!!Harry

One of the fastest is the 727. Friends of mine fly it and can get up to mach .88 when fuel isn't a consideration. Business jets? Definately the Citation X. Turboprops? The dash 8 400Q and the piaggio avanti (385 kts)

The max speed for the early airliners would not even be close to the numbers that have been stated here. The Boeing 727 should never exceed Mach .82 (high speed cruise) and typically flies between Mach .78 and Mach .80. I would be surprised if those old Pratt & Whitney's could even create enough thrust to get either the Boeing 707 or 727 up to those speeds, not to mention that the pilot would be exceeding maximum speed limits by more then just a bit...Not safe at all!Now omitting the small private jets I will state again that currently the Boeing 747-400 is the fastest sub sonic commercial airliner (heavy iron) flying todays skies and it's normal cruise speed is quite a bit higher then other airliners max cruise speeds.http://www.aerospaceweb.org/question/perfo...ce/q0150a.shtmlRegards,Van LatendresseYeoDesigns/AFG GroupPanel/FDE Designer

I'm not one to wanna "argue" but I've done research in the past in regards to this question. The 707-300's are consistently, or more often than not, reported as having the fastest maximum speed, and the fastest cruising speed even compared to the latest version of the 747. http://matthieu.papin.free.fr/English/aero...t/aircraftb.htmhttp://members.home.nl/m-stoel/aircraft.htmhttp://www.boeing.com/commercial/sitemap.htmlhttp://www.pbs.org/kcet/chasingthesun/planes/707.htmlIt is even reflected in flightsim a/c (I know this is not the judgemental factor)with the 707's acheiving higher KIAS or mach numbers than the 747's.You would think the newer jets would be faster, but there came a time when economy had to be introduced...fuel efficiency become an important factor in the aviation world, both in cargo and passenger service. The 747 IS the best combination of the two, speed and economy. If a 747 is full, there is no aircraft with a lower cost per seat! The 707 is faster, by very little, but LOVES to drink the JET A !!!!Harry

Dude Dude Dude. The 727 can easilt hit .84. Trust me. My friends tell me so. The old jet engines have a good thrust and as well most are effiecient at altitude. That is where the old engine work best. Look at the Olympus engine son the concorde. Effiecient at altitude. Not below though. I would put a 727 up against most airliners today for speed although i agree with you 747 statement.

Weren`t the Convair 880 and 990 series pretty fast in their day. I recall them being quoted as faster than the 707?Still it might just be my aging memory. More importantly , I have not seen a CV990 for FS yet..CheersLungs
