New Microsoft Flight Simulator announced!
Good to see something new in the flight simulation scene, even if it doesn`t say simulator in the title. Looking forward to hearing more about it..James

David Maltby's BAC1-11
Hi I have quite a few hours in the Maltby 1-11`s and find that the climb rate for the 1-11 200 and 500 (which tend to be the variants I fly) are not too bad. Full of fuel I could get a comfortable 1900fpm at low altitude once the a/c is cleaned up . Climb rate with the flaps set to the takeoff position is not great - it does take a while to accelerate before retraction. The largest plane I`ve flown IRL is the mighty `172 so I can`t say with any authority but I actually like the fact that you have to concentrate on energy management when flying these old birds. Trim is certainly going to be a factor, the checklist recommends 3 degrees of nose-up for takeoff. Another thing to check would be the spoilers - I have my saitek quadrants configured to use one axis for spoiler when flying 2-engine jets and I had a problem (when first setting up fsuipc) where it was holding the spoilers slightly up when the lever was in the retracted position. On the 1-11 panel there is an amber warning light just below the glareshield near the captain`s airspeed / Attitude indicators. This illuminates when the spoilers are deployed. Hope you can work it out. If you want a real slow climber try the HS-121 Trident by the same designer - nicknamed the 'ground gripper' for good reason! CheersJames

New Rig! - FS Issues - and im very sad.
Can you post a screen shot of the processes tab of task manager, maximised window, with show processes from all users ticked? It might be something outside of FS causing the problems..Don`t give up hope.CheersJames

New System... Big bugs!
Damn - that so annoying for you.Silly question, have you got the additional power connector(s) on the video card connected? It does look like either a power or heat issue and it sounds like you got the PSU covered. Do you have any overclock? Some drivers seem to have auto-overclock functions which might be causing problems - I know my ATI 4870 has this option- not sure if NVIDIA do the same.Good luck with it..James

FS9 and Dreamfleet's B737-400
Its really interesting how different we all are. I`m sure people`s calibration and controller hardware must make an enormous difference. The only 3 jets I can handfly IFR without losing it are 1) the WIlco 734 as discussed, 2) the Maltby BAC 1-11 which I truly love and 3) the Iron Knuckles dc9 in fs2002 (it was never the same in FS04). I vividly remember when I first got the hang of it doing KMIA - KDCA in the dc9 from chock to chock without the a/p - it was stable enough to hold the flight levels pretty well without continuous tweaking.I don`t have enough experience in the LDS 767 but it sure is a nice a/cSorry for the digression..James

FS9 and Dreamfleet's B737-400
Hi It can definitely be done. You need to replace the eadi and ehsi gauges with some freeware replacements. Look up Peter Mcleland - hi pioneered a technique which used to make available by email. I think he used to hang out on FS.com more than Avsim.I reckon the Wilco 737 classic is a really good plane if you can`t get the dreafleet working. I agree the exterior model isn`t that fantastic but the handling is nice (I can IFR without the autopilot in it) and its pretty polished now.CheersJames

Sound 5.1
With a little effort, PMSounds freeware from the Project Magenta guys can place sounds on other channels / audio devices.CheersJames

Who has the best C152 (payware or freeware)
Hi Like you , I`m keen to have a nice 152 as that is the aircraft I have real hours on, along with the Tomahawk.Don`t go for the Flight 1 C152, it is pretty old now (made for FS2002/4) and has some strange yaw behaviour (IMHO). I think there were 3 or 4 service packs for it (including one which specifically mentioned yaw changes in the release notes) but it never felt right to me. The carenado a/c is not very old at all. It is nice to look at (both panel and external) but I wasn`t that comfortable with the handling. The French freeware 150 I reckon flies the best but has no 2D main panel, though the vc pretty good. It has nice sound too - a smooth burr when climbing out. My 152 consists of the carenado 2d panel matched with the freeware aerobat. I have dual monitors so use the 2d carenado panel is on the 2nd screen with the outside view over the glareshield of the 150. Ok I have to ignore the flap position indicator in the port door pillar in the vc but its a small price to fly for a nice flight model.Cheers James

Your favorite short flights?
NZWN (Wellington) to NZNS (Nelson) is a nice flight. 35 minutes chock to chock in (say) a Dash 8 or Beech 1900D. Nice coastline, 5000 ft amsl hills and a VOR/DME approach into NZNS if the weather is a factor.CheersJames

A New A32X series of aircraft freeware!!! PLEASE READ!!!!!
Excellent.Any freeware is good. I hope it comes together for you and don't be put off by the negative comments. Freeware is hard work. Many many moons ago I did a Bristol Airport scenery for FS2000. It was very basic but took me ages. When I had an email from someone asking if I was going to update it to fs2002 I was so pleased. One positive response, to me, made it worth releasing to the public..Good luckJames

FS2004 Multiple screens
hi thereI run three monitors using 1 8800gts and 1 fx5200 pci card and had all sorts of problems when I first added the pci card. It was a driver problem, basically nview seemed to really dislike having a 2nd card added to an existing install.Eventually I removed the 2nd card, uninstalled the nvidia drivers, added the 2nd card again and then reinstalled the nvidia drivers from scratch so it picked up both cards simultaneously. This has resolved all my problems.I run with a single 22" exterior view and 2 15" monitors behind my instrument panel - generally the AWX Kingair or PMDG 744, depending on the mood - both work fine on the triple monitor setup..Hope you suss it outJames

Swap file size for FS9 in XP and location
To the original poster. Historically I have always had a partition for the OS and a partition for apps on a single physical (or RAID array) drive. I was advised to ditch the partition and put the OS on a physical drive (or RAID array) and FS on another physical drive. I have put the OS on a pair of sata II 80gig drives in a RAID 0 (I don`t care about fault tolerance and the read perfomance is nice) and bought one of those new WD 500Gig drives dedicated for FS. I ensured that the RAID pair and the FS drive were attached to different controllers on the mobo. With this configuration I have seen a great reduction in stutters, especially on short final where it really used to annoy me.If you have a big USB hard drive for temporary storage whilst you rebuild your rig I would recommend removing the partition, even if you end up with only one large C drive.Best of luck - I spend as much time mucking around with the pc`s as I do flying! Cheers James

My homemade 767 MCP
Very smart. That is a good idea to use IDC cables for the connections between modules. I have multi-coloured spaghetti behind my switch panel already and there`s only 24 switches on it! Keep us posted and make sure you pop into http://www.mycockpit.org/forums/ too if you haven`t already.CheersJames

My homemade 767 MCP
Very nice work! Opencockpits cards are really good.Is the circuit board with the switches & 7 segment LED`s on it the Opencockpits MCP board or do you make it yourself.CheersJames

goflight avionics
Hi If you are building a c172 sim I would go for the flap / trim goflight module instead of the MCP. You would have an unwanted undercarriage control for a 172 but hey you could fly a T182RG from time to time right! I`ve flown a few 172`s and haven`t had the pleasure of one with an autopilot yet - in NZ I`m happy just to have an ADF! You could look at the desktop aviator stuff too - I think he does a cessna plunger type throttle panel. Good luck with the project and let me just say that no amount of research is too much so good move posting here. It`s costly to change your mind once the time / money have been committed. I`m very slowly building a KA-350 panel using Opencockpits gear and MDF..CheersJames

Landing Gear Switch.
Hi Another option is to buy a cheap usb gamepad ($10 or so) and pull it to bits. I have done this as part of my setup, two of the 12 buttons are now the up & down switches for my undercarriage lever..CheersJames

Where Does FSUIPC Store Button/Axis Assignments?
Hi Its in the fsuipc.ini file in the modules folder in fs9You can copy and then paste these back into a new fsuipc.ini file, however, be warned, the USB devices won`t necessarily match up to the same internal id`s on the new install so you may find that some stuff needs to be edited slightlyFor example I have two saitek quadrants, which the usb controller on my mobo likes to assign id`s too in a random order whenever I have to unplug them. Hence, I sometimes have to remap the id`s in the [axes.aircraftname] section of my fsuipc.ini file.Best of luck with it. I too have ages invested in custom (i.e per aircraft ) button / axis assignmentsCheersJames

FeelThere/Wilco again...
Is it just their support that is a problem? I have the FS9 737-3/4/500 and am very happy with it, in fact, behind the AWX kingair and and the RAS SF-260 its my favourite a/c. However, I have not needed to rely on their support forums so can`t really comment on it. It would be very good to have a full list of fsuipc offsets for the 73-4, but I bought the product under no illusion that this would be made available so I have no complaints.I`ve found flight1`s forums to be quick, but the answer I got was no good - 'it works fine on our machines', when I had an issue with the GPS in the C421, apart from that I`ve not had to use the payware support channels much at all. CheersJames

Yoke/Joystick switcher
Hi This linkhttp://www.aeroworx.com/smf/index.php?topic=2228.msg15470takes you through setting up some controls for the aeroworx king air using fsuipc. Whilst the article is for that aircraft, the principals employed are generic and it is a really good pointer to how to set up what you want to do. Best of luckJames

Rudder Barely Works in Air..Help!
Hi Are you in a jet? Chances are it has a yaw-damper. This will quite often suppress the bulk of the rudder movement in the air if it is switched on. A yaw damper is an automatic rudder control which prevents positive feedback in a dutch-roll. Try switching the yaw damper off and see if it does the trickCheersJames

Saitek yoke using 40% cpu
Rottenlungs replied to a post in a topic in System Hardware: PC | MOBO | RAM | CPU | HDD | SSD | PSU etcSorry to hear you are having no luck..One question. Do you have any wireless devices, e.g keybd, mouse, joysticks? I`ve heard of people getting odd behaviour with wireless usb and they tend to get overlooked because keyboard & mouse are the first things to be attached to the pc..CheersJames

Can I convert my XP installation to a Raid 0 after installing a second drive?
I run two 80gig satas in raid 0 for gaming. Generally when you add the new drive and go in to create the R0 array, all data on both drives will be lost. You could get around this by taking an image of the current drive (Ghosting) and then loading the image back on to the new array once it is done. However, this will probably take as long as a reinstall to set up so it isn`t worth bothering with.Interesting to see what the other poster is saying about R0 being of no benefit. I have tried 2 drives unraided, r0 r5 and raid 10 and r0 seems to be the best place for me.CheersJames

Smoke trails from aircraft toward the ground
HiIIRC this is caused by an addon aircraft which has loaded the fs2002 contrail effects file over the correct fs2004 one. You will need to go and get the correct fs2004 fx_contrail_l.fx and fx_contrail_s.fx files from whichever of the fs2004 disks has it on. You may need to trawl the .cab files until you find it. Naturally backup the ones in /effects/ just in case you want to revert.Good luckJames
