April 19, 201115 yr I run FSX on a SSD. I shortens the load times a lot, especially with payware screnery being loaded. It doesn't help FPS or scenery pop up/blurries at all. The only other benefit I have seen is when you touch down, sometimes you get a micropause while the touchdown sound effect is loaded, this doesn't happen with a SSD though. -Iain Watson-
April 19, 201115 yr Author Good news Jon - Newegg currently has your memory on sale for $149.99 with promo code EMCKFJA32 as part of their 48 hour sale. You will have to subscribe to their e-mails to use the promo code, however. Also, there's a few discount codes here (10% of PSUs for example) which still haven't expired. Too bad the 10% off all SSDs already expired!SSD caching is meant for users who can't afford a large SSD and it doesn't come near the performance of a dedicated SSD. Here's some reading material on it at Tom's Hardware. With a 240GB SSD, you don't want to use SSD caching.Seeing as how you will have your PSU for several years, I would really recommend a modular PSU for a much cleaner install, and preferably 80 PLUS Gold rated. Seasonic X-850 or Corsair AX-850 are hands down the best - but they really are pricey! Right now you can get the Corsair AX-850 for $165 with promo code EMCKFJE34. Add the $20 mail-in-rebate and it's $145, so not too shabby. Thanks Corey for the killer info, I too get the eblast deals in my email and saw the crazy deals going on right now.Now for my rant: New Egg is out to take all our money, they wont be happy with a Laptop here and a desktop there.. Noo, they want you to buy a coffee maker and a wrist watch and a Recliner and a TV and a Rice Cooker, Air Purifier, Espresso Maker, Water Jet Dental Pic..... ##### newegg.. #####. lol I've really got my eye on the Klipsch 5.1 system they normally sell for $600 and is now going for $300.... 50% off. So very difficult to pass this up and THEY know it.Unfortunately, I won't be buying this system for a little while and don't want to risk stocking parts just yet. Never know what could happen down the road, I like to get everything all at once give or take a few things. If I was in the market for a new system, like others have said, I'd wait for the ngx to be released first, at least, then you will know how well it runs and upgrade knowing you are getting the best parts available at that time.Chris FarrellI'm not in a big hurry, my current PC still works and should for a bit longer! I run FSX on a SSD. I shortens the load times a lot, especially with payware screnery being loaded. It doesn't help FPS or scenery pop up/blurries at all. April 19, 201115 yr Klipsch is high quality stuff. I have had the ProMedia 2.1 system on my computer for 7 years now and I absolutely love it.You're patience will do you well in the long run. But I will say that that's the first time I've seen that memory come down below $170 - it's a really good deal. If you see the Seasonic X850 come down below $140 anytime soon, pick that sucker up! I don't think you have to worry too much about how to change your build depending on the NGX. NGX isn't going to change anything - especially if you're already buying a high-end system. Also, the new intel processors aren't coming out till Q4 anyway - long after the NGX should be released. But since you guys had to bring up future considerations, here's my computer hardware forecast through the end of the year (i.e. - until the release of LGA 2011 in Q4 2011 and Ivy Bridge in Q1 2012):1. i5-2500k will continue to be the recommended processor2. 2133MHz will continue to be smoking fast for memory3. 8GB of memory will continue to be the new 4GB4. 750W-850W will continue to be plenty of power for single GPU computers5. SSDs will slowly drop in price as the latest versions are released (don't expect huge price drops, however)Q4 2011/Q1 2012 brings lots of changes:1. nVidia Kepler - much more efficient and less heat (28nm). Should mean your 750W or 850W PSU will continue to be plenty sufficient in the future2. LGA 2011 - whole new enthusiast platform (new CPU, mobo, and RAM), DDR4, PCI-E 3, 6+ core3. Ivy Bridge - drops right into Socket 1155, 22nm, cooler, quad coreIf there's no way you're waiting for Socket 2011 to drop, then you should probably buy soon. First, not a whole lot more is going to change between now and December-ish. Second, you don't want to drop $2,000 on an 1155 system only to have it completely overshadowed by socket 2011 two months later. In other words, get your use out of 1155 now. I suppose that all depends on your perspective, so this is me saying that this is my perspective at least. April 19, 201115 yr you mean 4 channels not DDR4 for LGA2011 right Corey?and PCIe 3.0 will not arrive on time for LGA2011 it seems. PCIe 3.0 is due 2012. LGA2011, Q4 2011
April 19, 201115 yr Well that too. DDR4 was more of a wild guess No PCI-E 3.0 for LGA 2011?! Let me guess, no standard USB 3.0 either?! April 19, 201115 yr no standard USB 3.0 either?!nope, apparently no native USB 3 for LGA2011You know I think PCIe 3.0 is a non factor anyway, but it's supposed to be out for Ivy Bridge next year, just like USB 3.0 support
April 19, 201115 yr Just found out that it is indeed a rumor. Gigabyte is not discontinuing P67. My apologies for spreading the rumor. My advice still stands, however: wait for Z68 to see what it brings, though probably nothing.I still think he should wait for the Z68. Always go for the latest technology available, unless the previous one is at a really nice bargain, which won´t happen. Alexis Mefano
