RTE to PLN Conversion

Featured Replies

Is anyone aware of a program that will convert flightplans with a rte extension to flightplans with a pln extension. I need to covert MD-11 flightplans which are in the folder to flightplans which will be recognized by Active Sky Evolution. I am using vroute premium for plans. If vroute premuim has a plan I can download it as a pln to Flight Simulator X Files and then as a rte to PMDG\FLIGHTPLANS. Active Sky will then recoginize the pln in Flight Simulator X Files. I have copied and pasted rte files from PMDG\FLIGHTPLANS to Flight Simulator X Files but when I try import the rte into Active Sky from Flight Simulator X Files rte is not in the list of available flightplans. If I have to enter a plan manually into the MD-11 and save it, the extension is rte and I know of no way to get it into ASE.Thank youMichael Cubine

I don't think there are any replies because I believe there are no programs which can convert rte to pln. I can't find anything for FSX on Google. I found one program for FS2004 on a nordic site but I can't access it from Google and if type in the address in address bar and get into the site I can't find the program.Michael Cubine

Sure, why not use FSBuild? It should handle this without too much fuss.

What I do is the same as you, ie.download Vroute's information into FSX, then start FSX and save your flight as a flightplan by typing say, New York to London, etc. Then close FSX and start ASE. This way, when you go into Briefing, ASE will see the flightplan that you saved in FSX.I hope this makes sense.SteveYeo

That is probably the way to go but I don't want both vroute and FSBuild plus I am only looking at maybe 3-4 flightplans I got off of Flyaware and typed the plan into the FMC and saved with the rte exstention. All other plans have both pln and rte exstentions from vroute.Thank youMichael Cubine

You don't have to use FSbuild to create the flight plan from scratch. You can just copy and paste or open the saved flight plan. I copy/paste flight plans from flightaware.com all of the time.

Where do you paste the plans too?Michael Cubine

I copy from the Route section of flight aware.flightaware.jpgAnd paste to the route section of FSBUILDfsbsc1.jpgThese are just images I pulled off the net, so don't be thrown off that the FSBuild screen doesn't show the actual route. Rest assured, it works. Don't worry about filling in the upper fields asking for airports and runways. Those will auto complete when you hit build after pasting in the route.

Branton TurnerI can copy and paste routes from Flightaware into Vroute but there are numerious validation errors as can be seen below. Most domestic routes will be accepted but TransAtlantic routes will be rejected. With as many errors as there are in the beginning and middle of the route it is not worth the effort of entering a STAR to get from T104 to EDDM. If this route was accepted it could then be exported in both pln format and rte format. Let's just forget about it. But this same route can be entered into the MD-11 FMC, saved as KLAXEDDM001.rte, and flown to EDDM with no problem. Michael Cubine

I don't use Vroute, so I can't say how it would work. However, in FSBuild if it doesn't recognize a waypoint it just skips it and moves on. When I encounter this, usually when using routes from routefinder.com, I just change the NAT waypoints in FSBUILD. Once FSBuild shows the waypoints correctly, under the build menu, I select FSX and PMDG 737/747. It will export the route into both formats at the same time. Then when you load up the MD-11, the company route is saved and pops right up. Since it is saved in FSX format as well, Active Sky can also use the route. All that being said, when looking at the pictures you provided, I almost wonder if V-Route would be able to understand the route if you removed the space between the north coordinate and the west coordinate (5430N 10000W to 5430N10000W).

Branton TurnerI will try your suggestion about removing the spaces between the north and west cooordinates and see how that works. I am only talking maybe 4 or 5 routes that I can't get into Active Sky. So I really don't think it is worth the $40 FSBuild would cost me. Besides I am onto FPS Limiter now and it has become the crisis of the monment.ThanksMichael Cubine

Brandon TurnerI eliminated the spaces in the coordinates and it made no difference. Still a lot of error messages. I think I should wait several days before I try another route from Flightaware. I believe that right now with the change to a new AIRAC cycle is not a good time. I found a route to EDDM with STAR but that is in the previous cycle which could cause problems. I think I will wait about a week to try a route just to make sure that Flightaware, Vroute, and the MD-11 are all using the same cycle.Michael Cubine

I also use flightplans from FLIGHTAWARE a lot. Try "Generate Route" on http://www.simroutes.com . They usually work good with the flightaware format of waypoints on oceanic routes. there you can export the route into the .pln AND .rte format (choose download flightplan "PMDG").Cool is also to import the flightaware routes in the google earth format after a real flight arrived. there you see exactly the STAR and runway used on arrival at any US airport. With the free tool GENav.exe you can even import the actual AIRAC cycle into the google earth-file of the route and see the matching waypoints. For me the ultimate realism to fly exact routes from the same day...
