FS9 Hanging up while 'Loading Terrain'

Featured Replies

I am really hoping some one has an idea because I am at my wits end on this. The problem is just as the title states. What gets me is that, last time I used FS was a few days ago. I haven't had anytime to fly this week so I haven't started the program and more importantly I haven't installed/deleted/changed/looked at anything cross-eyed since the last time I used it and it worked fine then. Now all of the sudden it won't load. It did this to me once before- I disabled my mesh, suspecting a conflict there, then restarted and it worked fine. I re-enabled the mesh and it continued to work. Worked fine for a few weeks in fact. Now this. I tried to start the sim at KBOS and it hung up at about 17%. Tried at KSFO and its 10%. I have searched and searched for topics with people having the same issue and it is always a scenery.dat or something they added. I haven't changed anything and I have been taking bits out and putting them back in an effort to fix it (no luck with the mesh this time around).I am really trying to avoid a reinstall. I just did it a few weeks back and I really hate going through that. My scenery addons are as follows:Fly Tampa KSFO, KSAN, KSEA, KMIA, KMDWFlightZone 02 KPDXFreeware KBOSQuite a few MACH1/Shez Airports like KONT, KRNO, KLGB, KLAS, KPSP, KPHXUltimate TerrainWhat else is annoying is that every time it hangs up it seems to initialize FSUIPC (registered) and if I make a change and try to restart, FSUIPC gets angry with me and freezes the sim at the splash screen so I need to restart the computer every time. Ready to give up and use FSX full time.Edit: To rule out an localized scenery or even UT USA, I set up a flight in the UK and it still hung up. It gets much further, 57% in fact before the hang up but still no luck. No error message or anything. It doesn't even crash... it just stops loading.Edit #2: Still poking around at this, I moved the AES (demo version) folder out and tried to start a flight and the load got much further- 55% or so. When I put it back in the load made it completely through the 'Loading Terrain' phase but stopped as soon as it switched to 'Adjusting Scenery Objects'. There has to be something other than a bad bgl or scenery.dat at play here. terrain.cfg or something? Seems like the more progress I make the more lost I actually get. Thanks in advance! Ian

Disable all of the scenery add-ons. If FS starts, then enable them one by one until it freezes again - the last one enabled is the culprit.DJ

You mention scenery.dat. Have you tried deleting ALL instances of this file in your Scenery and Addon Scenery folders? They are safe to delete - FS will simply rebuild them.Doug

I disabled all of the non-required scenery areas and it loaded up for me. I started adding them back and I have yet to find one that causes me issues but there is a catch: So far I have only added back a few of the default areas because another problem has turned up. It seems like anything I do will freeze the sim. I can make a few inputs on the default 172 and that is ok but much else hangs it up. At first I tried loading another plane while the sim was loaded and it froze. Played with a few active camera keys, froze it. Looked around the cockpit, froze it. So I guess I am to the conclusion that it is not what scenery it is loading, it is how much. Something seems to be seriously broken and I have no clue what.Has anyone else experienced something like this? It looks like it is reinstall time again already which is a bummer because this install is just three weeks old and is probably the best, well organized FS9 install for me to date and then this happens. I am holding off on reinstalling to see if anyone has any advice but I am at a loss for what to try next.

Hi,If you are using Vista or System 7, try this (even if you aren't using Aero):http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/easily-disable-vistas-aero-before-running-an-application-such-as-a-video-game/If that doesn't work, try renaming your fs9.cfg file by renaming it to fs9.cfg.orig and then starting FS9.Hope this helps,

No luck with letting FS rebuild the CFG file. Disabling aero did make it load noticeably faster but I still have problems.Right now I have no add-on scenery enabled. Loading up the default flight, the Cessna loads at KSEA but the FPS drop through the floor very quickly and with in a minute or less the whole thing grinds to a halt. Memory leak somewhere? Seems like the more complex things are the quicker things fall apart. For example, trying to load the sim with add on scenery causes it to give up before it finishes loading and trying to select a plane such as the iFly 737 stops FS in its tracks in the menu. I guess it is reinstall time for sure now. I wish I knew what happened... I am completely baffled how something got so broke between the last time I used the sim until now. No viruses or anything... it just broke itself.Thank you for all the advice, I appreciate you all taking the time!-Ian
