Monitor Stuttering and Flickering

Featured Replies

Hey everyone. Ive been having a few visual problems with FSX recently, i guess i could say these have been happening from day one but only now do i really notice them. My monitor (an AOC E2343F) has been giving some very weird flickers recently, like rewinding an old video in a video player. I can get distortion lines going across the screen during FSX game play. Another problem (and i think this may be linked) is that no matter what tweaks i do i am constantly getting stutters, i am currently using FPS limiter @30FPS max and i still get stutters. At the moment i am going to try and re-build my fsx cfg but i really doubt this will solve both problems. I would really appreciate some help... Thanks.

Do you have Vsync turned on?For the stutters try this if you haven't already

Im not sure how to turn Vysnc off/on anyway so can you help? At the moment im considering uninstalling and going by NickN's guide absolute to the letter to reinstall fsx. I doubt things can get worse than they are now.

To turn Vsync on got to the FSX profile in nVidia Control panel, or nVidia Inspector and set the option "Vertical Sync" to "Force on"That should work in full screen mode, but in windowed mode you may need to edit your FSX.CFG and addForceWindowedVSync=1in the [GRAPHICS] section

But be aware than if you turn on VSync in windowed mode, you're likely to see a big hit to frame rates...vsync in windowed mode will force the frame rate to lock at a rate equal to your monitor refresh rate divided by an integer (i.e. for a monitor with 60 Hz refresh rate 60/1 = 60fps, 60/2 = 30fps, 60/3 = 20fps, 15, 12, 10 etc.) So if you're getting 29 fps without VSync, turning it on in windowed mode will drop the frame rate to the next lower synced rate in the series, or 20 fps. If you're getting 45 fps without it, VSync will drop it to 30. In full-screen mode this does not happen.

Very true. I have it off myself in windowed mode. What I did is to map a button in my yoke to alt+enter in FSUIPC and whenever I need to switch to some app other than FSX (like Active sky for QNH or to check approach charts) it makes it very easy to go windowed and back to full screen

Well at the moment i never use windowed mode anyway, so its full screen with VSync. Results from the reinstall was VERY good, frames are extremely smooth and no stutters as far as i can tell. Only problem im having is the textures are occasionally flickering on the screen, this is only at the begining of a flight i guess once everything is done loading so its not that bad. I will however be resetting nVidia control panel settings just to see if that solves it. If so i will re-apply the settings one by one until i run into trouble again.

Ok just tried fiddling with all my nVidia settings as well as cfg tweaks and the textures flickering on screen does not seem any better. Could anyone help here please?

I see you have a WD Blue, how is FSX installed?Maybe this disk is a bit too slow for FSX??

I do not really know what you mean by how is it installed? But i never had this problem with my old config and HDD and that was definatly slower. And besides it seems to be on this install only followings NickN's guide.

If you did follow Nick´s advise, and didn´t skip anything, you would know what I mean when asking about how you installed FSX!Whistle.gif

Is the video card overclocked? Flickering can be a symptom of a too-aggressive OC.What 'zackly do you mean by "texture flickering?" Ground textures, buildings, panels? Are they flashing on/off? Is it happening at default airports as well as add-ons? What AA and AF settings are you using?

The card is not overclocked but the CPU is. I purchased the computer overclocked, so im not sure if anything has been done to the graphics card. AA settings are exactly as Nick reccomended with nVidia inspector so i do not think that is the case. If texture flickering may definatly link to the graphics card i will contact the company who made and OC the computer tomorrow.

In nvidiainspector, if you click on the "Show Overclocking" button in the lower right corner, it'll show you your 580's settings.Default for a stock 580 is GPU Clock 772 MHz, Memory Clock 2004 MHz, Shader Clock 1544 MHz. If the settings are higher than that, it's overclocked, either by the factory or by the builder. If it is overclocked, you can try setting the default rates and see if the flickering stops in FSX--doing it this way will only change the clocks until the next reboot.
