Featured Replies

Hi,I'm about to buy two new add-ons for fsx : one is surely Aerosoft's Heathrow airport the other one...well...I have ben looking at GEX and UTX....I , so, have to questions:1) What is the difference between these two add-ons?2) Which one do you suggest?P.S I am planning on buying ( eventually ) ONE of these in the "Europe" version.

Here's an excellent explanation: http://forum.avsim.net/topic/264026-difference-between-gex-and-utx/ . If you install both, make sure UTX is placed just above propeller objects in the scenery library.Best regards,Jim

I would say that if you are only going to get 1 of the 2 (GEX or UTX) I would get GEX. The reason being that you will get the better ground textures and more to look at provided you are not a VFR pilot. If you are a major VFR pilot then UTX may be better for your choice. GEX will replace all the default FSX ground textures and UTX will replace the land class/water class and roads/rail roads. Honestly they go perfectly well with each other and most likely you will end up getting both anyways like most of us have. To take that a step further you can also add in Scenery Tech Landclass to fill in where FSX fails. All 3 work together but the layering of the scenery is important. Here is some good info that explains it better: GEX-UTX-LandclassJim

You really should get both as GEX and UTX are complementary products: GEX has the gorund textures that FSX applies over the terrain according to the landclass and coastlines/riverbankss/lakeshores specified in UTX.You should aslo get FS Global Ultimate Europe/Africa elevation mesh for vastly improved terrain elevations over default FSX elevation data.Cheers,- jahman.

Very good info...thank you...finally i know the difference between these two add-ons...some people on youtube said that they are the same...i see they are definitely different...Two more question. While waiting for replies I surfed the internet and saw this other scenery add-on : FEX ( Flight Environment X ) 1)What can you tell me about this add-on?2)How will all these add-ons ( PMDG MD-11; Aerosoft Heathrow, FEX/GEX/UTX; REX2.0 ) impact FPS?thanks again....

FEX... I also have this as well. What it does is replace the default sky/clouds/water. In FEX you can pick from different variations of each to suit your needs and likes as well as define what resolution you want them at. I run mine at 1024 DXT for all items. They do have a SHD set (super high definition) but I really dont see the point in using them. To top it all off you will want a weather engine to generate real world weather. I am using the FREE FSrealWX lite for that at the moment. Here ia a link to it: FSrealWXJim

Good info. One question though. With my specs, can i be able to run the MD-11 REX UTX Aerosoft's heathrow ( yep i've decided to go for aerosoft... : D ) all at th same time having at the same time good fps?

Your going to want to clock your CPU higher. Get it to 4ghz or better and you should be fine depending on you traffic level.Jim

If you have FS9 UTEuro/USA, you can use a converter program to reuse the land class data (much better than FSX LC) and install FSX default road night lights (and rivers). Works well with GEX.

FEX, like REX (but minus the weather engine!), is a replacement for FSX clouds, water and weather depiction in general, with REX being the more popular of the two. Of course the more stuff you load the lower your FPS, so you likely have to adjust your cloud radius, water render quality, etc. to match your hardware.Cheers,- jahman.
