Transitioning to Windows 7 64-Bit

Featured Replies

Hey everyone,Well, I'm about two years behind, but I finally got my hands on 64-Bit Windows 7 Ultimate. I just needed to clarify a few things.First of all, does FSX run stable on Windows 7? I've heard a few horror stories but I'm hoping it works out.I've decided to clean install 7 rather than upgrade from Vista, hence a lot of my settings and files will be wiped out. To combat this, I have ordered a 1 TB hard drive for backing up FSX among other things. This is the BIG question. If I clean install FSX + Acceleration on the fresh install of Windows 7, will it be as easy as dragging, dropping, and overwriting folders from the backup to the Win7 FSX install to get all my add-ons back? I have REX and UT2 as payware add-ons. Will I have to reinstall them from scratch? Also, what's the FSX performance like from Vista to 7?That's all I can think of for now but any and all help is much appreciated. Thanks all!

Regards,

BoeingGuy

It's been running good for me for about a year now. From what I've read, it performs better on Win7 64-bit than on 32-bit. Not so sure how much of an improvement it is from Vista to Win7; I personally don't believe it's not that much or any difference at all.I'll let the pro's answer that for you. But that's my take about FSX on Win7.

If you do a clean install of Windows 7, you'll have to reinstall FSX/Acceleration and all addons (except for scenery like MegaScenery). FSX and many of your addons make entries to your system registry and those are required for FSX to start up. However, Flight One has a registry repair tool that supposedly fixes all fsx entries in the registry. You can move your backup to the FSX drive and run the registry tool and see if that works. If not, you'll have to do a complete reinstall. You might also have to reactivate FSX if you are successful with the registry tool. I recently did a clean install of Windows 7 due to a new MB and CPU and reinstalled FSX and Acceleration. Then I placed all my MegaScenery folders on another hard drive, then added them to the scenery library. For most scenery you can do that but many have built in security like FS Dreamteam products. REX replaces you default scenery textures so you shouldn't have to reinstall that if you use the backup you saved. There's little or no FSX performance boost from Vista to 7 or at least it is extremely small. When you add scenery to the Scenery Library in Windows 7, don't forget to read the pinned topic at the top of this forum.Best regards,Jim

Do a complete reinstall of FSX - too many issues trying to match registry entries, etc. The FLight1 registry tool has no affect on add-ons - all it does is make sure the registry is pointing to the current location of FSX.Also - when you reinstall FSX - do NOT let it install to the default C:\ProgramFiles(x86) folder in W7 - that may cause serious issues with various add-ons. Best to select a custom install and put it in it's own folder like C:\FSX or preferably on it's own drive.Good luckVic

Vic, good info on the Flight One registry tool. I didn't know that it made sure the registry was only pointing to the current location of FSX. I thought it "repaired" all the default FSX registry entries. I did know most of his addons would have to be reinstalled and I indicated that in my post. But, I'm really confused as to why you should not point to the default x86 folder and put FSX into its own folder. Yes, I have read various reports of people having problems with installations into the x86 folder but that is extremely rare. I have always had mine installed in the default FSX location and have never had any problems. I think those people who had problems with the default installation just didn't do something right and that's not really all their fault as Microsoft should make software that will be installed without any problems or make sure all software is installed properly in their OS. For instance, most developers use dotnet framework to compile and properly install their addons, including FSX/Acceleration. Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables are also mandatory for proper installation of some FSX software/addons. Many of these mandatory redistributables are not automatically installed on everyones system. They usually are installed when new software requiring it is installed but that might not be happening everytime. Having UAC turned on and an antivirus program running in the background are also bad ideas when installing new software. I have read a lot of reports where antivirus programs think a valid addon developer's module is a trojan and it is not. So, if the module or file doesn't get installed, then one would think Windows 7, 64 bit must be the problem and the fix is to keep it out of the x86 (default) folder as one person (repeat one person) tried it and it fixed his problem. So others try it too and, wa la, it fixed their problem too! Sometimes reinstalling stuff several times works. If there was a problem with the default, 100% of FSX users would be reporting this problem and they are not (at least not me). So I think it would be best to install FSX in the default location as that is where some of the developers have stated in their addons that FSX is located. That's my $.02 cents worth and I'm sticking to it!Best regards,Jim

Suggest you check this out: How does WoW64 work?It might help with understanding how software, 32 bit, is treated in Windows 7.
