December 19, 200322 yr Hi All,OK - here's an interesting one.....I was taking a flight from Pincher Creek, Alberta to Calgary Int'l and when I was cleared to land for runway 16 I opted to select another approach. I selected ILS runway 28 and was told:"Cessna C-FMIK cleared ILS 28 transition YC circle to land runway 16."I re-selected my approach and received the same clearance!? I puttered along and when I was told to contact tower as I was turning final for 28, Tower instructed me to enter left base runway 16.I landed on runway 28 anyway and as soon as I touched down, tower told me to contact ground.I can't figure this one out :-lol. Anyone else experience this??Mikehttp://www.members.shaw.ca/madamo/boeingsig.jpg
December 19, 200322 yr Author If I am understanding your question correctly-while msfs allows you to request different approaches-it still requires you to land on the runway of use. Therefore the circle to approach clearance is correct-you are cleared to do your requested approach but must break off the requested approach and circle to land on the runway of use which in your case is 16. I have this all the time at my home airport-where rwy 27 is usually the prefered landing runway. Therefore-if I ask to do say the vor 18 approach to a full stop landing-the clearance may be the same-cleared for the vor 18 approach circle to land rwy 27. Often-when the ils 27 is in use and conditions merit it-I will ask for the ils 27 approach circle to land rwy36-as my hangar is at the end of 36 and this saves me taxiing the whole length of the airport.I requested an approach like this a few weeks ago going into ktvc. I was cleared for the ils 28 and was in imc. However, the winds were blowing from the south 25 gusting to 34 thus favoring 18 which has no approach. I asked for the ils-circle to land 18. After breaking out of the clouds above circling minimums I was able to land on 18.http://mywebpages.comcast.net/geofa/pages/Geofdog2.jpg Geofa WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE-the best Flight Sim!
December 20, 200322 yr You also have the option to select other runways for landing. If you want to shoot the approach to a different runway, and land on that runway, you need to both request the new approach and the runway. Otherwise you will be cleared for the requested approach, but cleared to land on the originally assigned runway.
December 20, 200322 yr How can you select different runways? Mine nNEVER has that option. KSBP in CA. It is always RWY11. I can never select 7, 25, or 29. It kind of stinks since 29 is used most in the real world. I know because I live under the approach for the CRJ's, S340's and E-120's.
December 21, 200322 yr To have the ability to select another runway you have to have multiple runways open. I have noticed when flying to airports that I have installed AFCAD files that open multiple runways I have the option to select a different runway when given intial assignment. If you acknowledge the runway assignment they give you however, you cant pick a new runway, just a new approach. For example, I have an afcad installed for simflyers LAX and when I am flying there I get to choose runways. I can also pick runways at SLC. Actually had an odd approach at SLC yesterday. I requested to fly an approach for the runway parallel to the runway I was assigned. I was ordered to fly the approach and then "sidestep" to the other runway and land. Made a big mess of that landing too. It was ugly.Brew
December 21, 200322 yr At uncontrolled fields FS9 allows you to choose your runway. At towered fields, you can choose your approach but you must land on the assigned runway. Works the same way in real life, but you can at least ask for a different runway. There is not guarantee you will get it.
