August 9, 201114 yr Hi guys , I have a system (specifications below) and thinking about upgrade .Would it be a big difference from a oc i7 950 ( 4.3) gtx 470 and switch to a oc i7 2600K with a gtx 580 , and if so would it make a difference in frames and how much ? August 9, 201114 yr That ought to yield a pretty decent improvement according to the FSXMark11 results. Not only that, but current 1155 boards are supposed to be compatible with the new Ivy Bridge chips to be released next year. Comparing the results I see, you should see something along the lines of a 25% improvement in the benchmark. That's not to say you will see the same improvement with your normal settings and addons applied, but the benchmark was designed to be fairly strenuous. If you're fairly happy with what you currently have, you might wait to see what happens with Sandy Bridge-E (socket 2011), which is supposed to be released at the end of this year. It's probably going to be a much more expensive upgrade than 1155, though. August 10, 201114 yr Author Wow , is that improvement in frames only thanks to switching the graphic card ?In that case i think i upgrade only the graphic card for now and wait until the end of the year for the mobo and cpu . Best regards , Gérard van Veldhoven
August 10, 201114 yr Wow , is that improvement in frames only thanks to switching the graphic card ?In that case i think i upgrade only the graphic card for now and wait until the end of the year for the mobo and cpu . The framerate difference Corey mentioned is due mostly to the change in CPU.
August 11, 201114 yr The framerate difference Corey mentioned is due mostly to the change in CPU.Indeed. I would keep the 470 and see what type of improvement you get strictly by upgrading the motherboard and CPU. You may very well decide the 580 is unnecessary. Keep in mind that nVidia Kepler is also releasing at the end of this year or early next year. Honestly, your 470 is plenty good enough until that's released. Should be very exciting! August 11, 201114 yr Author Ok guys , first of all thanks for all your help , At the moment my 950 is stable at 4.3 and if i upgrade only to a new mobo and a 2600k what will be the min - max oc that can be achieved , what i try to say is will it be worth to upgrade the mobo - cpu at this moment , would there be a big increase in frames since my 950 is allready 4.3 .I see a lot of signatures with a 2600 k oc to 4.6 , so if i could oc the 2600 k to "only " 4.6 , will there be a notible difference against this oc 950 , will it be worth to change the system ,since the max difference in oc is only 0,3 ? I know that fsx is a cpu game but what would be the difference if i only upgrade the gtx 470 to a 580 or doesn't that make a difference at all ? Thanks again for your help , really appreciate it , Best regards , Gérard van Veldhoven
August 11, 201114 yr I think almost everybody who has upgraded from a first generation i7 to a second generation Sandy Bridge chip has said it was well worth it. It's hard for me to say personally as I upgraded from a Q9550. Sandy Bridge has been proven to be faster clock for clock - I believe somewhere along the lines of 10 to 20 percent depending on what you're doing. So even if you only clock it to 4.6, you will still see better performance than your i7-950 would see at 4.6. Also, the 2600K is a waste of $100 over the 2500K - yes, spoken from the guy with a 2600K! FSX doesn't care about hyperthreading and the extra cache on the 2600K makes no difference. Besides, you may even decide to upgrade to an Ivy Bridge chip next year, so why drop $300 on a CPU now? Ivy Bridge will be compatible with socket 1155, but will be 22nm instead of 32nm (less heat) and it will bring 3D transistors to the table. While IB is not a new architecture, these two changes should hopefully allow for significantly better overclocking than SB. August 11, 201114 yr Author Hi Corey , I think you're right , spending $300 for a cpu at this moment is a waste when next year comes a new generation ,I think i read somewhere that if your pc is fast enough that a new graphic card ( gtx 580 ) gives you an improvement so i might go that way and order a gtx 580 and see if that gives me an improvement and next year a new mobo and pcu if the new generation is out . Thanks in advance , Best regards , Gérard van Veldhoven
August 12, 201114 yr Hey Gerard, thanks for starting this thread as I too have been contemplating whether or not to upgrade and have a similar system to you own. I think I will also wait for the Ivy B.
