August 10, 201114 yr Hey guys, Been out of simming for about a year or so. Just downloaded the awesome NGX and looking for a bit more performance. If I recall I have a I7 975 3.33ghz OC'ed at 4ghz and an ATI 5870. I've been reading that NVIDIA makes a graphics card more suited for FSX for some reasons. However, I have an ATI card, I'm wondering how difficult it would be to switch to a NVIDIA card. Would it be worth the switch if its difficult? Or should I just upgrade to a better ATI?Thanks for the help,James
August 10, 201114 yr yep FSX = Intel / Nvidia - Intel / Nvidia = FSX, but even the ATI's work well. Something goto do with the shader stuff. Is there a reason you want to change to Nvidia ? Any performance issues ? Ryzen 5 1600x - 16GB DDR4 - RTX 3050 8GB - MSI Gaming Plus
August 10, 201114 yr Author I feel like I am being easily persuaded to switch to NVIDIA just based on what most of the fourm members say in regards to performance. They don't bash ATI's by any means, but seems they do favor NVIDIA based on tests, etc. That being said, I won't switch to a NVIDIA card if its too difficult to do-it-yourself. I don't know if its plug and play or I'll need to go through a long process of installing the NVIDIA card and so on.Would I benefit more from switiching to a new NVIDIA card (i.e 580 GTX) even though it may be a pain in the butt to install or just to upgrade to a newer ATI card (i.e 6970 or whichever is best)?

Plug & play will detect a new vga card and than you need to install the drivers. Fsx favors Intel and Nvidia , fsx uses .dds format IF I AM NOT MISTAKED which is native to Nvidia, not that ATI's are bad , they very good excellent cards. Can you tell me which PSU do you have ?What problems are you facing in fsx with the 5870 ? Everyone prefers the i5 2500k for fsx. Ryzen 5 1600x - 16GB DDR4 - RTX 3050 8GB - MSI Gaming Plus
August 10, 201114 yr Author Thanks for your help Ironmaiden. I am running an I7 975 3.33Ghz thats been overclocked to just about 4Ghz. I have gone through the ******* tweaks and saw a little improvement. There aren't really many big issues other than not getting out of the teens FPS's wise using the 737NGX in most locations. Maybe my computer can't do much better than that but just feel like it should.I take it a new i5 2500K and a 580GTX would be a killer upgrade. I would consider if it's not too much trouble to do it myself.

As to buying the new hardware my suggestion is let other member's view your post and let them help you out if they feel anything can be done on your current system , as I have been off computer hardware almost 15 years and do not know much about the newer technology. I am the XT / 286 / 386 / 486 / P100 man :) Please do post your complete current specs including RAM / PSU (power supply) . Ryzen 5 1600x - 16GB DDR4 - RTX 3050 8GB - MSI Gaming Plus
August 10, 201114 yr I'm doing the excact same thing at the moment.I've been using ATI cards for 2 years now (4870X2 + 5870, |8800GT in 2008|). They both are good cards, but in FSX they are terrible! Plain terrible! I did the Tutorial 1 flight today again, and at Gatwick i got about 20 FPS in the cockpit. I used the Clear Skies-preset! It seems crazy to get 20 FPS when no clouds in the sky! Not even ANY traffic! Today i started at Kastrup Airport in Copenhagen, Denmark with the Fair Weather-preset. 8-11 FPS!! OMG! It's not even a payware airport. Well, I haven't had the time to install my payware copy yet. Because of this **** I gave up. I just ordered a NVIDIA GTX 560 TI 20 hours ago and expecting to pick it up tomorrow in 10 hours or so. Bye, BYE ATI. Thanks for your LOVELY support to the FlightSimming community. I probably won't get another ATI card before FSX is dead. You just lost a high-frequency paying customer (1 card every year, about 600 Dollars every year)! And I'm sure I'm NOT the only one quitting this "Biiip". I like both of them and yes I will always agree that Nvidia = Fsx and vice verse no doubt about it. But I use fsx on an ati htpc card frankly speaking I did not expect it to work well but it does, definitely not in very heavy add ons which I do not have :) PSU 700W - which brand ? It's a brilliant piece of software. I've never seen anything like her before . Please go buy it immediately! It's a MUST-BUY! PSU is a SHG. I'm not sure if you know the brand. I got it when I bought my first desktop in 2008. Do you think it's the bottleneck?? Never heard of your PSU and AMD/ATI does not list it for the HD 5870. Check here http://support.amd.c...es/listing.aspx I have a 450W local PSU which would give me an output of not more than 250-300W , and anyway my HD 5450 does not pull much power. Advise for the good power consuming cards use a branded recommend PSUs like corsair's. A 700W PSU does not mean it will give you proper output. Consider updating to the latest CCC drivers. Yes a PSU can bottleneck it. AND SHE IS A BEAUTY , CAN I TAKE HER ON A DATE :) Ryzen 5 1600x - 16GB DDR4 - RTX 3050 8GB - MSI Gaming Plus

Yes a PSU can bottleneck it.A local store sells it as their own brand. Hmm does it really matter which brand it is? I just thought that 700W would be enough. I know it can't use all 700W, perhaps 550-600W instead. I'll have a look at your link. The corsair/ power & cooling and the other certified PSU's give you what they write. And even if tomorrow you change your card to the Nvidia 580 you will require the proper PSU. Check the recommend PSU's for both Nvidia & ATi. Ryzen 5 1600x - 16GB DDR4 - RTX 3050 8GB - MSI Gaming Plus

August 11, 201114 yr Okay thank you so much for your help. That could be the problem then :/ Bye bye money That could be or it could not. You change to any High end GFX cards you will require the good pure PSU. else your system will bottleneck itself. Yes bye bye money :) that is the reason I am not upgrading my new system to a new system :). Ryzen 5 1600x - 16GB DDR4 - RTX 3050 8GB - MSI Gaming Plus
