August 11, 201114 yr Hi all, How is this done?On approach (A/T engaged) I want to fly on speed mode on the MCP but still follow the VNAV path.Is this possible?I have seen that to use speed mode you have to turn off VNAV. Thanks,Christos
August 11, 201114 yr I haven't played around with VNAV yet but did you try the decent page, IIRC there is a speed or path option inflight, also did you try Speed intervene? Jay Vorkapic
August 11, 201114 yr Hit "Speed INTV" on the MCP. When you do, it will follow the path, but set the speed that you're inserting on the MCP. Magnus Meese NGX Pilot VATSIM C1, SUP and Pilot
August 11, 201114 yr I have a few questions on speed mode here: http://forum.avsim.net/topic/343836-managing-speed-with-the-mcp-at-question/page__fromsearch__1 This is, partly, related to this thread. Don't want to hijack your thread Ourgas2 but I'm hoping we can both get some help here. -- X-Plane, Mac OS, XSB
August 11, 201114 yr There are only certain times that you will see the auto-throttle SPD mode with VNAV. For example, when in VNAV ALT, the AT will be in SPD mode to maintain the VNAV speed. On descent, you will see it when you have a level restriction which requires you to shallow your path. VNAV path is calculated from the ground up, at iddle thrust. For example, coming into VHHH you are required to cross a fix on the arrivals quite low very far out (like MUSEL at FL 130). You are still more than 100nm from the airport, so the VNAV plans an idle descent from cruise to cross MUSEL at FL130 - your modes on descent are HOLD | LNAV | VNAV PTH. Once you reach MUSEL at FL 130, the AT mode switches to SPD since now you require a shallow descent for the next fix. Then there is on approach logic. This is where the autoflight will maintain SPD and a VNAV PTH for an approach. This occurs when certain criteria are met, like making the on approach waypoint the active waypoint on the legs page. This is normally the fix you see displayed in the CDU LSK 6R after you select an approach in the DEP / ARR page. When that waypoint is selected, or when it is the next waypoint in sequence on your legs page, the FMC will revert to "on approach" logic. This is when you will be in SPD mode and VNAV PTH mode and have direct control of your speed while maintaining a path. Otherwise, if you want to fly a certain speed with a certain path you will need to be in VS mode and manually adjust as needed. Don't ask me why, but that is how the Boeing works.
