August 16, 201114 yr I5 750 = I7 920/930/950I5 2500K = I7 2600K I7 is not better than I5 generally speaking (comparing same generation I5 - I7) and FSMARK11 is good proof of thatIt was not true in Nehalem and it's not true in Sandy Bridge HT is useless in FSX, the little extra cache is a non factor
August 16, 201114 yr i5 and i7 in the end are just brand names, for example the 2500/k and 2600/k are very similar processors, with some disabled features on the first one, much like the former i5 750 which I have and the i7 860, both 1156 socket processors. The specific model is much more important than the fact if it is "an i5" or "an i7": the newer i5 2500k is apparently much faster than the older i7 860. My i5 is the Lynnfield core? 1st gen cpu I believe? So what advice do we offer? Go for the i5 or the i7?At the end of the day it all comes down to cost. I believe that you should get the most amount of system for the least amount of money works for me :) I think the 2nd Gen i5 would be an option, but if he can go for the i7 it would be slightly better... Andy Yes. that is a first generation i5. I would recommend the i5 for FSX. To be honest, if you're only using the system for FSX, it's pointless paying $100 for almost nothing. If you are using it for other software which supports hyperthreading or benefits from the larger cache, then yes, get the i7 Di Agron Dell XPS 15 L502X | Intel i5-2540m @ 2.60GHz | 4GB DDR3 1333MHz (2x2GB) | nVidia GT525M | Seagate 500GB 7200RPM | 15" 1366x768 | 23" LG 1360x768 | Got a hardware question? August 16, 201114 yr By 2nd gen i5 do you mean the 2500/2500k? That would be a good choice. If one is on a bit of a budget and only does FSX, it would be the best one, I believe. If budget isn't that much of an issue AND hyper threading would come in handy with other programs that do indeed benefit from it, the 2600k would be worth considering. EDIT: what NGX said, basically! August 16, 201114 yr So i7 it is then in anticipation of MS Flight ?? Which will use all cores??Slightly more future proof than the i5 as far as I am concerned, but it's only my personal thoughts. Andy Sit at the back! It won't reverse into a mountain!
August 16, 201114 yr MS Flight isn't going to take advantage of hyperthreading. More cores yes. Hyperthreading no. August 16, 201114 yr HT gives a 15-20% performance boost AT BEST. You pay a 50% more for that without even knowing how Flight will performFor all we know, Flight could be a nicely optimized sim, GPU bound, and the CPU won't matter all that much. It's not so easy to make games that use as many cores as you can throw at it...your call
August 16, 201114 yr Because it's microsoft. Hahahahah! What are you like....... Good point though......lol Di, tell me if you use REX Weather Engine or do you use fsx realtime weather? i was told the weather engine was not very good and that Evolution Sky is better? Any idea if this is true or what is best to use... sorry, don't mean to hijack post :) Andy Sit at the back! It won't reverse into a mountain!
August 16, 201114 yr I use REX overdrive. I'm glad they've implemented the new features like windshear/draft, icing etc. Much more realistic than FSX default thats for sure. August 16, 201114 yr Tom's Hardware does a round up every month on the latest greatest CPUs and they can't even recommend the Sandy Bridge I7 2600K at its current price point or any other processor over $250.00. Sandy Bridge Core I5 is the most bang for the buck and the only people that need an I7 are those that want Bragging rights, or run a lot of multi-threaded software. Read the full article below. With a good 3rd Party cooler you can easily get the I5 to 4.4 ghz and FSX will fly. Many have even gotten as high as 5 ghz with water cooling. Make sure you get a descent video card to go along with it. Example GTX560ti or GTX570 http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-llano-processor,2989-4.html Paul Deemer
