January 4, 200422 yr Well, I actually thought I had been into FS for quite some time now but I obviously seem having missed this one here. What is Landclass? I see Landclass files appear every now and then on the New Files list, but what is it all about? :-hmmmSorry if that was pretty dumb. :-hahEtienne
January 4, 200422 yr Landclass files can add surface details such as roads, rivers, lakes, city details, etc.Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Support
January 4, 200422 yr Actually landclass is a way of describing the underlying terrain on the surface of the earth. FS uses a 1km grid system where each grid square is classified such as urban, town, crop, forest, marsh, desert, etc. FS uses this information to decide what ground textures to display (and, subsequently, what autogen objects to render). Since the landclass that comes with FS is often out of date and inaccurate, third parties release updated sets for certain parts of the world.Roads, rivers, lakes, etc. come from another data set known as "vector data" since the data is descibed by arbitrary vectors rather than a regular grid. Vector data is drawn after the landclass-based ground textures.
January 4, 200422 yr From FSGenesis:"What is Landclass? Landclass is the patterns and colors that lay over the terrain mesh. It determines the location of the textures depicting various land-types, such as urban city-centers, suburban, crops and farmland, prairie, pine forest, decidous forest, swampland, rocks, etc. While both are part of the FS2002 terrain engine, landclass and terrain mesh are two different things. The terrain mesh is the shape of the ground; landclass is placement of textures on that shape. Landclass can be used with any terrain mesh, and terrain mesh can be used with any landclass."Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Support
January 5, 200422 yr Ok, thanks a lot for the replies. :)Now that you've quoted FSGenesis, do I need any payware to get those Landclass add-ons working or can I just get the files into my scenery folders and it'll work? Do I need FSLandclass for using these scenery add-ons?Thanks again! :-hahEtienne
January 5, 200422 yr Generally, the landclass files are freeware. Much terrain mesh files are freeware also. There ARE commercial mesh and/or landclass packages available, but for the most part, the files here in the Library are all free. And you don't need any commercial product in order to be able to use them. The landclass files are usually pretty small, but the mesh files can get large. However IMO they are both worth all the time it may take (via 56K dialup) to download them. -Lindy
January 5, 200422 yr Keep in mind there is also "waterclass" but there are fewer different textures for water compared to land.scott s..
January 5, 200422 yr >do I need any payware to get>those Landclass add-ons working or can I just get the files>into my scenery folders and it'll work?Hi Etienne,I can only encourage you to try out addon-mesh/landclass-data.Yesterday I tried out the free "British Isles"-Mesh from Fsgenesis. Install is easy (just copy the files into your fs2004sceneryworldscenery directory): and what a difference it makes! I will get me the whole of europe as soon as funds allow.ByeOliver
