P-51 VOR reciever location

Featured Replies

Hi I was looking up photos of P-51D cockpits and I've noticed that many cockpits have an RMI (they call it a "remote compass") tucked in the top left-hand corner of the cockpit. The trouble is, I cannot find the attached VOR antenna anywhere on the aircraft--according to my research, the antenna on the tail of some P-51's is virtually an earlier form of an RWR. Does anyone know where the VOR reciever on restored P-51's are located? Cockpit map http://www.warbirdsi...eummustang.html P-51C cockpit: RMI visible in top left corner http://www.timadamsp...C%20cockpit.jpg Description of P-51 antennas: http://books.google....antenna&f=false RMI in Warwick Carter's FS2004 P-51D: http://www.avsim.com/pages/1006/P51/ScreenMate_143.jpg

Usually found on the tail of the aircraft.

It is a 'remote indicating compass' (RIC).An RIC is not the same as a 'radio magnetic indicator' (RMI). On an RIC the single needle points to the heading measured by a remote compass, ie a compass not located in the cockpit. The two parallel arrows can be rotated by the pilot to serve as a headingreference. The compass rose on an RIC is fixed, you can see how the numbers are all oriented the same way. It is described in the manual you referred to, one page above where the antennas are described.http://books.google....compass&f=falseHere the remote compass is located in the wing. VORs did not exist during the war.

Hi Didn't they have ADF's during the war though? I've seen pictures of P-51s with loop antennas. Where would the ADF reciever go?

Would if be realistic if I put the default Lockheed Vega's ADF into the Warwick Carter P-51?

The compass rose on an RIC is fixed, you can see how the numbers are all oriented the same way.
On the FS9 P-51D the RIC rotates; there is also a heading bug on the RIC. See below. Pictures 7 and 10: http://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/showthread.php?133835-Warwick-Carter-s-P-51-In-Detail As far as I know, RMI's have the same features. blink.png

I think that is just a bit of liberty taken by the designer of that particular gauge. As far as wether an ADF in a P-51 is realistic: I'm not sure if they were fitted during the war but I don't think that it would be impossible to have one retrofitted. So if you want one put it in.

In that case, how do most modern P-51's without VOR equipement (e.g. Big Beautiful Doll) navigate? Do they navigate by GPS waypoints? NDBs?

It would depend on what equipment is installed in the plane or carried by the pilot. If he has a GPS he can use it, same for ADF, VOR.Lacking any navigation instruments the pilot will have to navigate by dead reckoning and landmarks.
