Problem at KASE (Aspen)

Featured Replies

Hi,I am trying to fly into KASE, but ATC always directs my too rwy 33, but I want to land at rwy 15.Now when i ask ATC for rwy 15 it directs me to circle to land rwy 33, but i dont want rwy 33.I have tried disabling rwy 33 for landing using AFCAD but that does not work.Anyone know how I can acheive this?CheersDan.

Hi Dan,ATC only lets you land on the runway that the winds favor. You thus need to switch your surface winds around for the proper landing clearance on 15. You can do this in the custom / advanced weather dialog for ALL stations to make this easier. You then must give ATC proper time to handle all pending takeoff/landings and switch the runway in use (about 5-10 minutes depending on level of traffic). The 15 approach circle-to-land 33 is normal... you can ask for any approach but the actual runway to land on will be dictated by the winds. A circle-to-land clearance means fly the standard approach, and if/when you have proper visual contact with the field, circle around to the proper runway for actual landing. This is an IFR procedure.Hope that helps!Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation SoftwareDeveloper of ActiveSkyhttp://www.hifisim.comhttp://www.hifisim.com/images/as2004betateam.jpg

As Damian mentioned, you must change the winds to have ATC change runways. FS2004 uses a default wind of 340 at 00 unless you manually change it, select one of the preformatted weather patterns or use the automatic update of realtime weather.Even with no velocity showing in the default wind, the program still reads the default direction and uses that for runway selection.Happy FlyingBob

I think that KASE is an unusual airport. From the Jeppessen airport diagram I read: Takeoff not authorized on RWY 15 without written permission from Apt. Mgr. You are trying to land. Maybe FS9 implemented a no-no for Rwy 15.Roger

Hi Guys,Thanks for your replies, yes KASE is an unusual airport, which is why I am interested in landing there. Now according to my charts the ONLY runway that you can land on instrumentally is rwy 15, using the VOR C or GPS C approach, rwy 33 is visual only. Now I am not totally sure about real life procedures but I was under the impression that you could request a different rwy even if the wind is not in the right direction?.So basically if the weather is below VFR minimums but the wind is in the wrong direction I still have to land visually because FS is fixed to landing me on rwy 33?.If this is the case, is there not someway I can FORCE FS to use rwy 15 all the time, I have done a few good landings now in my BAE 146, but ATC is non to happy with me landing without permission ;).CheersDan.

While FS2004 is a very good program, sometimes "as real as it gets" is not what the product delivers. In real life, special operational rules can be established and real life human decisions can be made for air traffic. FS2004 is a program that relies on a definite set of rules (the typical computer machine logic or 0 and 1, off and on, yes and no). Runway selection for FS is based on the prevailing wind direction, so even with a velocity of 0 the runway will still be selected by direction.Sometimes, these rules can be modified by programs such as AFCAD and they can make it closer to reality. Play with the variables and maybe you can make it work like you want.
