I run the update - it starts ok then it says something like "UPDATE FAILED" and shuts off.

Start to work from here:http://www.geforce.com/Drivers/Results/35051Uninstall the current drivers, via Device manager; no exclamation signs?restart the systemUpdate drivers...should work..

Ignore the above. Don't uninstall drivers via device manager. In the installer, click custom install then tick the fresh install box. That'll delete any old graphics drivers on your system then install the new ones. Make sure the drivers are the correct ones for your OS/GPU

Sorry to say, neither method worked. The installation halts during in the middle of the INSTALLEER. Google suggests using WINDOWS INSTALLER which I had installed to no avail. Hope I get more feedback or ideas. Thanks,

Where did you download the installer? Did you use the nVidia automatic driver finder tool on their website? Have you run installer as admin?

Di's method is correct and should work? Sounds like you may have a corrupted installation, Uninstall drivers from control Panel> 'add remove programs' and check you don't have multiple entries. make sure not to uninstall any Nvidia Network drivers. ( if there), Then reboot. Try installation again. If this fails, repeat above, but instead of installing new drivers, go to Device manager, open Display adaptors, right click on your device, ie Gtx 285.select uninstall. This will remove the card from the system. Then reboot, windows will detect new hardware and you should be prompted to select drivers. If these methods don't work, you may have a bigger problem, any other issues you can tell us? Does update itself work? these are the current correct ones for your 285 ... www.nvidia.com/object/winxp64-280.26-whql-driver.html Ron.

Thanks, everybody, for the help. I followed all the individual instructions verbatum to NO AVAIL! When I run "280.26-desktop-winxp-64bit-english-whql.exe", I get SYSTEM CHECK, License Agreement, and OPTIONS all checked off, then the warning.....NIVIDIA INSTALLER FAILED. Yes I am running XP64. For whatever it's worth, I am also using another partition which runs Windows 7 - (64). The 280.26 update installation worked just fine.Still hoping for a solution.Thanks.

Is Win 7 the primary OS or secondary?

XP AND WINDOWS 7 are completely independent. The bootup is a choice of windows XP64, XP32 and Windows 7. Been operating for years under these conditions. Only problem, is Nvidia update.

Yes, when you start up it gives the list of OS' to choose from, but after a certain time, does it automatically boot a certain OS? Does it automatically select a default OS from the list if you do not select which OS to boot into?

The plot thickens,

All options checked off
Can you select any options? or are they all greyed out? 1. Try this; Create a folder on your desktop, call it whatever. Next, right click on the nvidia installer and select 'Open'. change the 'extract to' path to the desktop folder you just created. cancel if the installation begins. Next, open the desktop folder, locate and remove the PhysX installer. Now run the setup from within that folder. Also check the installers effective permissions, ie read only box not checked etc.etc. It's a long shot, but I did have to do this once with a Vista64 system, you can put back the physX later if it works. 2. Go to Control Panel > Admin tools > services. check that Nvidia Display driver service and Windows Installer are not set to 'disable'. ( Change to manual and start the service). Ron.

1- The default in BOOT.INI is XP64 (the one with the trouble).2- Opened the installer in a FOLDER, took out PHSX folder, ran SETUP - same result. I believe the key to the whole thing is essentially the SETUP.CFG - I have to really dig into it.....seems too complicated to me.Thank you guys very much. I am still open for further suggestions.Abe

Nvidia installer failed
Try a Manual install method to bypass the nvidia installer. 1. Go to Device Manager > select properties of your card > drivers, and select update driver.2. A wizard will ask about connecting to the Internet, select No, not at this time. > next.3. Next window, Don't search, I will choose. next.4. Select have disk. next.5. copy files from > select Browse and point to the folder you created on your desktop before.6. open the folder called Display Driver and there should be the NV4_DISP.INF as set in file name box.( you may have to go through XP and English folders to get here? )7. select open and that should start the install. can't think of much else at the moment, a mystery for sure. Do you use the XP 64 to connect to the Internet?Possibility you have Malware if so, just a thought. Try and Rename the Nvidia Installer to anything, like stubborn.exe, sometimes malware blocks known names like nvidia ( mostly networks ) from running. Maybe guessing here but worth a try.A good program for detecting is Malwarebytes, it's free ( just google it) Ron.
