September 3, 201114 yr Hi Fellas, This morning I flew from KCDN to KMYR in the Duke turbine B 60. All went very well until I decided to "sight see" a bit in along the beaches just south of KMYR. I must have stumbled into a ATC no-man's land because the default ATC bounced me back and forth between Myrtle Beach, Charleston and even Jacksonville approaches. I mean within the space of 15 seconds at times I was handed off from one to the other and then right back to the original. Altitude was 10,000 ft and KIAS hovered around 174 kts. Very frustrating! Especially when I was not flying in a big circle which could have caused an ongoing "turf" battle. I know that Radar Contact exists but I have read that it really is much more suited for IFR and VFR. Is there anything else out there suited to handling GA guys flying VFR low & slow? I also enjoy using MCE and so I'm hoping the alternatives would also be compatible with MCE. Regards, John John
September 3, 201114 yr VoxATC does a great job for some with both VFR and IFR. I use it with MCE very well - I just seem to need separate voices for the two. If you like the stock ATC well enough but tire of the "game of handoffs," you might want to try the acknowledge but remain on frequency trick that works well when being handed from center to center - http://forum.avsim.n...ost__p__1990056.
September 3, 201114 yr Well, again I'm gonna push Edit Voice Pack 4. There are lots of great alternatives, each with their own set of pros and cons. EVP4 is free, easy to use, and is great for making the ATC chatter much more realistic than default, and with options for a much higher speech rate. However, the problem you're experiencing is, in addition to the "circular turf war" you mentioned, there is also a "vertical turf war" with ATC with the border being 10,000 feet. If you're cruising at 10,000 feet, you're going to be bounced back and forth between controllers like a tennis ball between Venus and Serena Williams. Flying with at least 2000 feet of separation on either side of 10,000 will almost always eliminate that annoyance. The same thing can happen in FSX at 18,000 feet too, so give that altitude an equally wide berth.
September 3, 201114 yr Author Thanks. I'd also heard abt VoxATC but never got around to checking to see if it was geared to IFR or VFR or both. I'll spend some time looking into it. Meanwhile, I appreciate the suggestion abt staying on frequency. Funny thing, I get so caught up in the flight and business of making sure I don't over stress the a/c, set myself up correctly, etc., that it never dawned on me to remain on frequency. I suspect that something else also comes into play here. It has just been "second nature" for me to automatically comply with the air traffic controller no matter how frustrated I became. Good suggestion! I appreciate it! John John
September 3, 201114 yr Author I didn't know abt the "vertical turf war" zones. That is also very good information. I really hadn't thought abt Edit Voice Pack because I thought it was software that allowed you to modify the default ATC phrases and really not much more. I will do my best to stay away from those particular altitude zones especially up and down the eastern seaboard. I really appreciate the info fellas! Thanks again! John John
