How Far is to far with overclocking?

Featured Replies

Right Now I'm at 4.6Ghz on air. According to Bios idle temp was 45C. But according to Core Temp the average temp between all four cores was around 31-35C. I tried to push to 5.0Ghz at 1.41v and The computer wouldnt even boot. So I guess if I get that message, that means My CPU is saying NO?

Try booting 5GHz with 1.45 vcoreTry booting 5GHz with 1.45 vcore. And the bios temperature will be the socket temperature, what you want is the core temperatures (found through core temp)

I'm thinking that lemon isn't worth the squeeze. 4.6GHz is very respectable, regardless of how many people are okay with (or say they're okay with) pumping 1.45-1.5V into their chip 24/7. I've lowered mine to 4.5GHz because there is no noticeable difference between that and 4.8. within FSX.

Spencer, is 1.41V the minimum Vcore you need for 4.6GHz? I wouldn't be trying to OC anymore if is, certainly not to 5GHz.If you couldn't have it stable before because of your RAM settings, chances are you were using more Vcore than needed. Try lowering your Vcore, or if you're happy with 1.41V, go for something a bit more conservative like 4.7 or 4.8GHz

what vcore should I try with 4.6ghz. something like 1.35v? I dont want to go higher than needed.

Every CPU is different, just stress test and see what yours is capable of. 1.35V is a good place to start for 4.6GHz, yes

ok I will see what happens. I usually will watch a few videos on youtube, and believe it or not that is the test. If it doesnt bsod during that. All is good.

Yeah, come on Spencer. Use a proper tool to stress test. Monitor your temperatures and Vcore while you do

but dont I have to wait 12 hours for that to run!?!?!

No. Besides, the point is you're wanting to stress your PC, not see if the Keyboard Cat video will BSOD your rig. Run Prime95 for a couple of hours while you're in the kitchen grazing for snacks!

You should be there monitoring temps at least when you first test your OC. If temps are ok (below 80ºC) for the first 10 - 20 minutes, then you can leave itAlso check your VcoreIt's maybe a good idea to set Windows to do small memory dumps in case you get a BSOD, though with Sandy Bridge it's 99% of the times a matter of bumping your Vcore
