Final aproach questions

Featured Replies

Gents,Ladies some questions regarding the final aproach 1. I hit VOR/LOCK about 20-15 out- What is your rule on that? 2. I See the ILS G/S diamond(i think it calls) is empty inside just pink line,- what dos this means that you do not have a lock but have activated the ILS? and when or far out is this visual in the HUD 3. When ILS G/S diamond is filled (pink)- Dos this means that you now have a Lock on the ILS (and should reply ATC "Established on the ILS" ? 4. I then activate both APP A+B- 5. I get also "Rollout" and "Flare" about 5miles out at about 2000feet- can any one explane this 2

thx Roy good info but also want more explenation as posted above thx ;)

Basically, you should come at the centreline (i.e. into the extended line of the ILS feathers) at less than 30 degrees offset from the runway heading in order to give the localiser and autopilot an easy time of lining you up, and as you say, fifteen miles out is about right. At this point you should typically be in heading hold mode with VOR/LOC selected, both nav radios tuned to the runway ILS and both course sectors on the runway heading with altitude hold on so that the ILS localiser overrides heading hold mode and switches to VOR/LOC when you intercept the radial. You will get a PFD annunciation to confirm locking and steering the localiser. You should then be lined up and flying into the glideslope from underneath it as it extends outwards and up from the runway (coming at it from underneath is important, as if you try it from above you can get bounced false ghost signals from the glideslope which you would not want to lock onto), as the diamond drops down to the centre of the PFD, just before it hits the middle, you select APP and engage both CMD buttons, hitting the APP button will override altitude hold and you'll then be flying the glideslope. So in short, you are indeed doing it all properly. All this will be confirmed with annunciations on the PFD if it is working correctly. You should be stable on speed as early as possible and configured as soon as you can to ensure a nice trouble-free approach, although in reality you would annoy ATC if you flew a 15 mile final at your threshhold speed, and in reality the gear comes down about five miles from touchdown, so this is when you want to be certain that you are 'in the pipe' and at your reference speed plus any kentucky windage you have added for gusts based on what ATC told you, although you certainly want the flaps down well before that as this stabilises thrust, the gear only requires a minor thrust adjustment as it doesn't cause a vast amount of drag, unlike the flaps do. Incidentally, the diamond indicators and accompanying scale are called the Glideslope Deviation Scale and the Localiser Deviation Scale. The 'rollout' and 'flare' annunciations are for High Category landings (i.e. when you can't see the runway well in poor weather). Depending on the runway equipment, the aircraft equipment, and the crew's qualifications to make such approaches, plus what you have selected on the MFD, it is possible to have the autopilot command when to flare and to steer the roll out stage of a landing, since the aircraft can track the centreline after landing by means of using the ILS beacon at the far end of the runway to keep it going straight down the runway even when you can't see out of the window at all, so in theory you could land more or less hands off in zero visibility using this stuff although this does require a crew to be qualified to do it. You will see other messages of this nature, such as 'land' 'no land' 'no autoland' etc, depending on what modes you have selected and what equipment the airport has. Answers: 1. I usually press VOR/LOC once localizer is alive. 2. When you see the glideslope diamond going down, press APP to intercept the glideslope. 3. Correct, a pink (filled) diamond indicates glideslope interception. You can inform ATC you have "captured the glideslope." 4. Once established on the final glidepath, ensure that the speed is Vref + 5 knots (example your flaps 40 speed is 140 knots, add 5 knots as a safety margin and dial it in the MCP). 5. Rollout and flare modes can be seen on the PFD once Autoland conditions are met. You will see this 1500 ft AGL. Hope this helps.

The rule is basically that you press VOR/LOC once ATC have cleared you for the approach ("NAX332, fly heading 250, maintain 3000 until established, cleared for the ILS rwy 22 approach" <- after setting the heading and altitude I click the VOR/LOC button)
