Scenery Load Issue

Featured Replies

A while ago I installed a small number of freeware scenery files and one of them created a problem for me with FS9. If I attempt to either load or pass over the Seattle area FS9 fails to run. If I attempt to load a flight in the Seattle area the sim hangs while loading the scenery files, that is it fails early in the load process. If I fly over Seattle the sim stops operating. In either case the task manager tells me that the program is not reponding. What is the best method to trouble shoot a scenery load issue? I have removed the freeware files from both the sim and from the control panel. I have ran the FlightSim Manager, ScanAFD and FSTscenery programs. In all cases the problem remains. How can I isolate the Seattle area scenery files found in FS9? Is there a list of the default files that make up the region? I just move from Minnesota to Florida and I have a new email provider. If I need to rebuild FS9, can I rebuild the sim using my old email address (no longer working) or do I need to contact vendor such as Flight1, PMGD, Aerosoft, Eaglesoft, etc. to have them change my licence information? Thanls Tom

Hello Tom, how do like Florida? As per the discussion we where undertaking; http://forum.avsim.net/topic/340187-seattle-area-problem/, what I finally isolated was a file in the scenery for KTCM by John Stinstrom. The file named: McChord_VTPL. I couldn't load a flight or fly in the area if the aircraft was aligned visually within approximately 90 degrees of KTCM. Disabling that file solved the problem. All of this of course is probably specific to my scenery for that area. I have; UTUSA, 38m mesh by FSG, other area airports enhanced with ADE9X and SBuilder including KSEA in this area, so it is hard to tell where or why the incompatibility is. However, different from you symptoms, the Sim would load just fine then crash as the panel view should have appeared or during a turn toward KTCM. Have you checked to make certain your scenery installs did not send files to; add on scenery / scenery and texture folders where they might still be active? I don't remember if you mentioned or I asked what OS you are running. If W7 it could be a permissions issue not allowing or saving changes to scenery.cfg? As a last resort, short of a complete reinstall you might try retrieving the stock scenery files such as; Addon Scenery, Scenery and Texture files as well as Scenery.cfg from your disk set. Remove said files from your FS9 install to your desktop or a back up folder and then replace ( don't do a overwrite ) with fresh from the disk(s) files. This may get you back up and running enough that you can start moving stuff back in from your backed up files to make a speedier rebuild. Sorry I can't offer anything about your email change, that I don't know. I hope this will help in some way. Best regards,Mel

Mel, I'm sorry that I never got back to you to closeout our 1st discussion. The file named: McChord_VTPL was not found on my system or in my backups. I also did a system search using only the VTPL portion of the file name. Although I found a number of files containing VTPL, I did not find a file containg both the McChord and VTPL within its title. Florida has been great, but it took a short while to have my cable and internet installed so I got way behind in reading the forums. I think my next attempt to resolve my problem will be to install the MAIW files into a temp folder to see what a where each file is place during installation. I'm hoping that step will help me isolated and identify the MIAW files placed in FS9 during installation. Tom

One idea is to install LWMViewer2. That will load all FS9-format files at an airport or specified lat/long. It won't load files from older versions of FS that still might be compatible with FS9 unfortunately. Alternatively you could install progmon from windows internals. That's kind of a brute-force approach, but you can see what files are being loaded around the time FS9 quits. scott s..

This is probably not the issue your having but it has some interesting similarities none the less. Sometimes flying around the Whidbey island area my sim would abend. I didn't realize it at first but the issues began sometime after I installed Victoria+ and CYYJ. So while experimenting, I happened to remove a land class reference in the CYYJ install and the CTDs dissapeared. Now as I said, this specific issue is probably not the root cause for the problems you're having but have a look at the land class files which you have installed in the area. Folders that are referenced in the Scenery.cfg file. You could make a backup copy of your scenery.cfg file first and then start to remove land class references from it. See if the CTDs disappear. Also, have a look at all of the scenery folders (that are in the area) that are referenced in the Scenery.cfg file. Make sure that none of the texture folders that you have are empty. If they are then remove them. Hope that helps...Mark

Scott, I pulled down LWMViewer2 and will try it this weekend. I need to read and understand the "manual" before I give it a try. Thanks Tom
