Anyone of you gurus care to tell me how to tell WIN 98 to play nice with 1G of ram? I have two HD's one with 98 and I want to keep that set-up but also use 1G of RAM for the XP HD. When I want 98 I just boot to the old HD and use that install. I want to use 1G of ram, or limit windows to using 512 in 98, does that make sense?? How can this be done, I know I have seen it before with regards to cache or memory tweaks in sys cfgThx.Hornit

HormitYou have to set Maxfiles= to a value of 512 or less in the .cfg file. I havn't used Win98 for a while and forget the name of the file but i'll get it for you if you can't find it. The problem with Win98 and more than 512MB ram is that Vcache tries to grab most of your RAM on bootup but can't handle more than 512MB. The above settins prevents it from doing this.David

Hello All,Well, in truth, I have yet to find anyone who has gotten 98SE to operate on 1 gig of ram. Lord knows I tried to do it for weeks and it was just a NO-GO! I know it will operate with 768, but I could not get it even to boot with 1 gig.I've read every article I could get my hands on, and either I wasn't doing it right or it just isn't workable.If you find out, PLEASE LET ME KNOW as I still have one puter in my network on 98SE and would like to step up the ram to 1 Gig.Best in your quest,[email protected]

The link http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx? from above is the one you want. There is also an old utility, MemMax 1.1, that will enable you to do this without having to edit files yourself. Be sure to get version 1.1; its free. I've done this on a number of Win98SE machines with 768MB or 1GB RAM and it always worked fine.David
