C172 Flight Characteristics
For those of you who are real-world C172 pilots and are flying one regularly in MSFS 2024, what do you think about the flight characteristics of the sim aircraft versus the real aircraft? I'm asking because my airspeeds seem lower than expected with typical throttle settings. Specifically, in the pattern, with flaps, and at reduced RPM settings. My final approach airspeeds consistently lag lower than the targeted 65 KIAS, even with typical winds and lower fuel landing weights. Has anyone else experienced this?

How can I adjust zoom using controller?
I don't believe there is any 'zoom' function assignable in the options / controls / assignments applet. I was messing around with this a week or two ago and had no luck. Correct me if I'm wrong.... Cheers,

FSX config. Good idea to refresh occasionally?
There is no better advice than making a backup copy of a stable FSX.cfg file every several weeks. It's saved me many, many times!

737-400 into Innesbruck
Bob-The attached packet of charts for LOWI will give you all the information you need. Additionally, look on YouTube for the many cool cockpit-perspective videos of all manner of aircraft on the tight, circling aproach to land. I have a flight set up from Geneva, Switzerland, LGGN, to Innsbruck, LOWI. I use the KONIL2 departure from Geneva, which is a beautiful, circling departure over the alps, and then back around and on course to Northeast to LOWI. The approach is the ALGOI 3A from the northeast, which is basically down to 13000ft to the KUHTAI (KTI) NDB. I then turn east about 5 DME from KTI to a heading of 080 direct Rattenberg NDB, over the northern ridge of the valley around the airport, and start my descent to cross RTT at 9500ft. At RTT, you then turn 180 degrees inbound, at which time you should then have the localizer to runway 27. Lock on to the localizer with autopilot and use the vertical speed to fly the published altitudes on th LOCDME EAST approach. It always seems to be a bit cloudy as I descend into the valley, but I typically breakout in enough time to go visual to the runway (the localizer is off-set and NOT a staright-in). All of this is depicted in detail in the attached PDF file.Have fun with this one, one of the most challenging and fun approaches in flight sim.Cheers,

FS9/X crashes 20" after loading..
M-I've just started to have the same problem with FS9 in Windows 7. I have not installed any new scenery. However, I did try and install some software that would convert my Sony Handycam into a webcam. Problem seemed to have started after that. I've removed the program, cleaned the registry, and tried a backup copy of the FS9.cfg, but perhaps there is still some trace of the rogue software somewhere that is causing FS9 to CTD. Any ideas?Regards,

I tried reinstalling video drivers, and that didn't work. I wonder if I could try reinstalling Active X11 (I am running Windows7)? Any recommendations?

LLZ or NDB APPROACHES
4-Star:An LLZ is a localizer approach, so I'm not sure why you would not want to see the localizer needle. Tuned properly, you always will. You should not see a Glideslope needle however, unless the approach is LLZ / ILS. Try the Localizer approach to San Diego KSAN runway 27, or the NDB approach (no GS or localizer) to Dubrovnik Cilipi LDDU runway 12 in rain and 1/2 mile visibility. That should give you what you're looking for.Cheers,

One of the most fun LLZ/DME approaches is to runway 27 at San Diego Lindbergh (KSAN). Definitely no glide slope information there. You have to descend based on the altitudes on the published approach, availabe here:http://204.108.4.16/d-tpp/1013/00373L27.PDFAdd a little cloud to you first attempt just to raise the bar a bit - there is a lot going on what with configuring the aircraft to land as you monitor altitude changes. On these types of approaches, I use a 2000/fpm descent rate instead of my usual 1800 ft/min. Plus, as if that was not enough, someone decided to build a parking garage inconveniently close the final approach / threshold. So if you're low in a heavy like the 747 400, you will tear off the rear bogies!

FS9 CTD
John-Removing the config file and letting FS9 try to rebuild it did not work. I even had a backup copy which I maintain periodically, neither worked, My screens all flash, go black, then FS9 crashes to the desktop, and I hear a chime like an error message, but nothing shows up. Would reinstalling DirectX11, or the video drivers help?

FS9 CTD
Hi All-When I click on my FS9 desktop shortcut, the splash screen appears, stays there for 5-15 seconds, as usual, but then FS9 crashes to the desktop. My multi-monitor system then starts flashing randomly, the icons disappearing, though eventually settling back down to the original desktop. This only started after I attempted last night to add some software to allow my Sony digital video recorder to function as a webcam. I suspect this is related. I just recently (6 days ago) updated my internet connection and router from Verizon DSL to Verizon FIOS. The upgrade went well, and everything was working smoothly, including online gaming with FS9, port forwardig through the router, etc. I REALLY do not want to revert back to the system restore point prior to the FIOS install unless absolutely necessary. But I would gladly reconfigure my wireless system vs losing the many years invested in tweaking FS9 to what it is and having to reinstall. Experienced user here, computer savvy.Please Help!

When you say high altitude airport, how high? What was the altitude setting on the mode control panel. I ask because if say you set 3000ft msl on the MCP, and you were at 4000 msl, you would have triggered a descent, especially at the relatively slow speed, that might have convinced the aircraft that you were in fact on approach, hence the Alpha Floor lock.Just a Thought.

AJ-Nice post thanks....fun approach. On that topic, also try the localizer-only approach to runway 27 at KSAN (San Diego) in marginal weather or at night / dusk. No glide slope! You have to step down your altitude based on DME while maintaining the localizer that puts you perilously close to a poorly-located parking garage near the runway threshold!http://204.108.4.16/d-tpp/1010/00373L27.PDF

PAPI lights help
I agree with cmpbelljsc - most of the time the VASI / PAPi / Approach 'Rabbit" lights are too bright in FS. Use the recommended tweaks and adjust as needed for your own tastes.

Ariane design are they real ?
A beautiful webpage and flashy manual do not necessarily make for a good flight model in FSX. And $110??? No flight sim aircraft is worth that...you could have almost had an hour in a real cessna 172 with an instructor and a few nice memories. Amazing....

FSX can be frustrating!
Newbie-There is a useful utility available at Schirotti.com called Autosavehttp://www.schiratti.com/files/dowson/AutoSave.zipIt was freeware in FS9, but you'll need to have a registered version of FSUIPC4 installed in FSX for it to work. Basically it saves ALL parameters of your flight, save for multiplayer settings, about every te minutes or so (adjustable). That way if you have a CTD, just look for the most recent time entry in your flights folder and load and you're back in action with the same aircraft and all of the radios, time, weather, etc set.Hope that helps!

Rick-Ahhh ok. I don't think that's possible though, unless FSUIPC recognizes that button on your headphones as a click in Flight Simulator, but maybe someone else has a solution. Why don't you just use a button on your yoke? Talk about hands-free!Cheers!
