MIP Map removal?

Featured Replies

I've been using imagetool that I go here at AVSIM I think and I would like to know if I can use this to remove the MIP MAPS from all my FS planes? There is a funciton to extract them, but it has no effect like the NON-MIP MAPPED default tetures that someone did. Any suggestions?

When you extract the mipmaps, you have to turn around and save the mipmap with the highest detail AS the texture you've extracted the mips from... If you take a 256x256 sized texture, you'll see mipmaps extracted that are 256x256,128x128,64x64,32x32 etc..... Save the 256x256 bitmap with the original texture name, which will overwrite the texture containing the mipmaps...Hope this helps... Hope it even makes sense :)-John

As you may or may nor know, I do a LOT of repainting. The software I use to do my file conversion work is DXTBmp. In the tool bar under "Prefs" you can turn mip-mapping off and anything saved will not have them. It is a simple matter too, to import an image with them and then save it without them.Has worked fine for me for the last few years. It is free and can be downloaded (along with other nice graphics tools) at:http://www.mnwright.btinternet.co.uk/Good luck!Heather

Um, this got me thinking, do the ground textures contain mip-mapping as well? what would be the effect of removing the mip-map? sharper textures?

Thanks for the help, Heather. It's an honor to receive a response from you!! It's like talking to a celebrity!

Celebrity!!!LOL! Well, I'm hardly THAT, but none the less, you are welcome. Hope the advice helps.Cheers!Heather

You can also use a batch mode with Imagetool. Copying Imagetool and a BAT file like this one :ImageTool -DXT3 -nomip *.bmpinto the aircraft texture folder. It will convert all BMP files in DXT3 without mipmap. The list of the possible flags can be called by the flag -?

Cheers guys, this helps a lot!

""Um, this got me thinking, do the ground textures containmip-mapping as well? what would be the effect of removing themip-map? sharper textures""terrible looking textures! LOL I tried it a few times to see and the results were not good.Works great with aircraft skins thoughRegards, MichaelKDFWhttp://mysite.verizon.net/res052cd/mybannercva1.jpgCalVirAir International VACougar Mountain Helicopters & Aviation[link:www.cgrmthelos.com]Cougar Mountain Helicopters

Sure you can!! :DWait a minute! Maybe you're one of those identity thieves. But then, you probably wouldn't look very good in my clothes. Thanks for the F-14 kudos. You do some pretty nice work yourself!Cheers!Heather

Any suggestions?Hi Scott,If you use a Radeon graphic card, you should NOT remove the Mip-Maps. The Radeon cards need the Mip-Maps inorder to be able to render sharp edges on the paints, instead of jaggies. ;-)So, this means:Radeon cards = need Mip-MapsNvidia cards = does not need Mip-MapsI had to add Mip-Maps to all my liveries to get rith of the jaggies, since I have a ATI Radeon 9800 Pro card. :-)Fly safe, Staffan AhlbergSweden/Stockholm/ESSAMD-11 Panel Team - Beta testerMy specs are:Dell Dimension 4600 P4/3.0 Ghz512 Mb DDR333 Dual channel memory128 Mb ATI Radeon 9800 ProCatalyst 3.9DirectX 9.0E171FPb Flat panel monitor 17"240Gb (2x120) 7200rpm HD

I agree Staffan. Textures without mips don't look as good. I try to avoid em'. Some are OK if they don't contain text or long thin paint lines. I very seldom have any problems with mipmapped textures blurring. Very seldom.

I would strongly suggest using Imagetool versus DXTBmp to open an image already compressed as DXT to remove mipmaps. If you open a DXT compressed image in DXTBmp the effects of the compression are much more pronounced than if you do so in imagetool, and even then you'll see it. It's just a lot less noticeable...DXT3 and I have a love/hate relationship.

Thanks fellas, I do in fact have a Nvidia FX 5600 Ultra 128MB card and I'm a real FPS nut, so I'll take lower quality stuff for better frames(I need 30-35! I'm a freak!) But I wanted to ditch the MIPs so I could view the default aircraft without the back of the aircraft being blurry while the front comes into focus. The DTX3's that I've got look good enough to me if I could just get rid of the blurries while I put the V-card on best performance.I'm a little different. But I'm looking for the effect the newer textures for the defulat airplanes have that have the blurries taken out. I'm sure you know which ones. I'm just trying to replicate that with all my A/C. If anyone knows a better way to do that other than the way I am doing it, if you'd let me know, I would be most appreciative. All responders to this thread are greatly appreciated. A couple of big names have noticed it so far!!!Greetings from smelly Oklahoma!!
