Winds 80° out of whack!

Featured Replies

I'm running build 647 with FSX. FSUIPC ver 4.60aI'm currently at 35,000'. The report button in ASE says I should be getting winds 239/114kts. I'm getting winds 166/99kts.I've tried clearing/resetting weather in FSUIPC. I've tried different modes in FSX, change from user to online and back.Refresh ASE, nothing works. Winds always 80 to 180° out of whack. Scott SimmonsCorona, CA

Hello Scott, It sounds like you are not using DWC. FSX is known to have many wind aloft depiction issues and DWC is the only mode (that we are aware of) that will give you accurate winds without major problems with wind directions.

True, I'm not using DWC. I fly primarily "3rd party" aircraft.I have switched to DWC mode but frequently experience the serious S-turn problems that the pop-up info describes when I hover the cursor over the DWC checkbox. I'm doing a flight right now. When I leveled off at FL340, the winds that I was getting were 80° off. ASE shows that they should be from 198°. What I was seeing is 286°.I switched on DWC and the winds DID straighten out but within 5 minutes she started to do S-turns. I set the heading manually in the MCP and turned off LNAV. After a few minutes Iwent back to LNAV and now, after about 10 minutes, she's holding course well. The METAR shows winds from 201°, I'm getting winds from 186°. I'm guessing that the difference is because the METAR reports winds in relation to True North and, since I'm flying over Northern California, I think the mag. deviation is 12-15°, that would explain the difference.

METAR winds are surface.

Hi again, Yes METAR shows surface winds... aloft info is shown in the Wx Report screen (under the surface information). And this is listed in TRUE, so there will be magnetic variation to account for. S-turns in DWC can be solved a number of ways, please check out the README.rtf file (ASE installation folder) and also there is a great recent thread in the PMDG forum concerning this with some great recommendations (unfortunately I don't have the link handy but search for "Active Sky Weather"). This affects PMDG aircraft as well as some others with extreme sensitivity to turbulence effects.
