Autoland flight dynamics

Featured Replies

I have done a couple of autolands and have noticed the plane floats a fair way down the runway before it settles. This floating charateristic is one that the 737NG exhibits but is exagerated by individuals who manually approach at too higher speed or flare to early. I would have thought that when autolanding the aircraft would plant on the runway rather that float. I realise that this topic has been posted but I would like to know if anyone else has noticed this during an autoland. I have version 1.00.3057 which is the original installer with SP1 incorporated. This is not an issue for me I'm just curious.

I've not had this issue with auto-land capability and it touches down right on the mark for me after many auto-landing.Is your altimeter set right? If it's off a bit it might think the ground closer then it is or further away.

Autoland use multiple sources, relying primarily on the ILS and radio altimeter. I think an baro that is slightly off (not sure about wildly off) would have little bearing. What is you touchdown V/S. I expect about -200 out of an autoland. And where in the TDZ are you touchding down. Again, I expect 1200-1500 feet past the threshold (2-500 feet in to the zone).

Last landing on 24R @ KLAX it seemed to take forever to settle down. I used the replay function to watch the landing from all views. The approach was perfect just the last 10 feet. The flare seemed slightly exagerated which ballooned the plane which then seemed to make a second attempt. The rear undercarriage contacted the ground very gently with the front wheel coming down also very gently. I use ASE and also was using BARO rather than RADIO. Also the runway elevation and length were correctly entered into the HUD panel in the centre console. Approach speed VREF+5.Seems to have two bites of the cherry when landing.Make no mistake if I could land it manually like this I would be stoked.LOL.gif

I am seeing the exact same thing post SP1. I've pretty much given up hope that this will ever be fixed. Others on this forum swear that SP1 completely fixes the excessive floating tendency on their installations, but for whatever reason I do not personally experience any change in this flight characteristic at all. The autoland system floats, yes, and if I use precise technique exactly as described in the FCOM, I float too in exactly the same way. I'm currently experimenting with using the .air flle from my copy of Ifly's 737 add-on as a replacement for the PMDG one. There is hope!
