Airway puzzle

Featured Replies

When i enter a route in the FMC ie; PANC-KLAX (ANC4 MDO B453 KYLLE B453 BOXER FOT AVE SADDE6)The first instance of airway B453 enters fine. I then enter KURTT and try to enter the B453 airway I get an invalid entry MSG from the FMC. It will let me enter all the way points as direct but I can't enter multiple instances of the same airway, in this case B453. The manual says I can do so but no joy, same goes for the 747 FMC.What am I doing wrong?Charlie Coulon

If you're talking about doing this on the route page, I would enter MDO B453 BOXER. The legs page should populate itself.

Why would you enter the same airway more than once? Normally you enter the first waypoint that is part of the airway you want to use, then you enter the airway name, and then the waypoint where you leave this same airway and start using the next airway. So the format would beSID -> FIXAIRWAY1 -> FIXAIRWAY2 -> FIXAIRWAY3 -> FIXetc. In your example above, I would enterANC4 -> MDOB453 -> BOXER.All waypoints in between will automatically be added to the LEGS page by the FMC.

In this case, the computer is simply looking for the simple route:ANC4 MDO B453 BOXER FOT AVE SADDE6Here's some background, if you're interested:The whole point of adding airway support in the FMC was to simplify the entry of your route (otherwise, it's manually entering fix by fix - think Delco CIVA INS). The only reason it is filed the way you've written is because of ATC. If you look at KYLLE (awesome fix name, by the way), it exists on an ARTCC border. It's an entry/exit fix for ATC to see who is entering their airspace. The ATC system calculates traffic flows based on who flows through what airspace, and it depends on entry/exit fixes like this to show which ARTCC the flight passes through. As such, you'll often see these right on, or very close to ARTCC borders (blue boxed line on FAA charts). Take a look at some flight plans with split airways like this, and that fix will likely be right near one of those lines (if not right near, it'll be the first fix on that airway in the new ARTCC, like with BLUES LDN J134 COLNS J6 HVQ J6 LIT BYP5).

That did the trick, worked like a charm! Thanks for the help guys, I guess my thought line was if it was filed that way- thats the way it gets entered. My eyes are now opened! Thanks again!
