"XP10 Blog: Some scenery textures in 10 are holdovers from 9. Is there a strategy to replace these older textures over time?"Simon you missed one very important question: Which arias in the world are 10 and which arias of the world are holdovers from 9 ?I'm wondering if CA is a 9 or 10 ?

Most of technical stuff went over my head, but it's fun to see someone who is obviously enthusiastic about their work. I hope some of the potential he hinted at will be realized in the relatively near future.

Very interesting reading! While knowing what goes on under the hood doesn't change the state of the product right now, it does give me good hope that Laminar Research will be able to eventually finish the product and let Andras' work truly shine.(*I'm gathering from the reading that many, if not all, of the landclass definitions are in place and specified - it's the texturing, objects, and scenery content which has not yet been completed.)Thanks for the interview/article! I enjoyed it!-Greg

Thats not sooo simple to answer as you might expect. We are not working with geographic regions, but with climate regions. This means, that there is no such thing as "texturing California" but rather the texturing of - just as an example - "hot dry" climate etc. etc. And even then, we often start with a mixture (mix old with new textures) and replace step by step smile.png

Well, not so much landclass definitions, but terrain definitions are in place wink.png . This might sound like nit picking, but it really is a big difference from the MSFS way of thinking. And yes, those terrain definitions MUST be in place. Each triangle patch does need to have a name (the pointer to a terrain type) attached to it. And then we assign to each of those name our artwork definition (terrain definition in the case of terrain), which then points to the textures to use.If you want to get a feeling of how many different terrain types the global scenery knows, then just look in the folder:
  • /Resources/default scenery/1000 world terrain/terrain10/

There you should see over 5000 TER files ... wink.png (each of them is pointed to by a terrain name from many DSFs ... and these TERs point to the textures ... just open one with a text editor, and you will see some DDS/PNGs being referenced). AND, no, we don't create - usually - any of those TER files by hand, but have an internal spreadsheet, that is transformed by our software to TERs (its much easier to specify them via spreadsheet than one by one).
