December 14, 201114 yr Hi all,Im a complete newbie when it comes to simulators but I caught the bug over the last couple of months.. Anyhow I wanted to build a dream setup so started trawling google for recommended setups and settled on a multiscreen eyefinity setup.. I built the pc myself using what appeared to be the latest and greatest consisting of .Intel Core i7 2700K 3.50GHz Socket overclocked to 4.6Corsair TX 850W V2 PSUCorsair Hydro Series H100 High Performance Liquid CPU CoolerCorsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1866MhzAsus Maximus IV Extreme-Z Z68 Socket 1155 8 Channel HD Audio EATX Motherboard1x 6870 2GB GDDR5 Eyefinity 6 Edition Mini DisplayPort x 62x HD 6970 2GB GDDR5 Dual DVI Dual Mini DisplayPort HDMI PCI-E Graphics Card in crossfire3x Corsair 120GB Force GT SSD Hard driveMonitors-5x NEC 23 INCH WIDE DVI-D BLACK MONITOR WITH LED BLU displayport 5x1 portrait giving a 5400x1980 res 1x hp 23" touch screen (for main panel 2d gauges) 1x 19" standard monitor(for overhead display)The setup was fairly straight forward all though the 5x1 eyefinity was a little tricky and catalyst would refuse to go into 5x1 portrait unless you did things in a certain order. But these are the issues im getting.1, With FSX settings all set as per ORBX guidelines (all pretty high)Frame rate starts at 25 fps, but after about 30 seconds will begin dropping to 10 fps, decreasing the Auto gen density to dense, sees an improvement for a few minutes and then framerate drops again, reducing auto gen further to normal sees another short improvement before dropping again..I have tried both unlimited target frame rates and fixing frame rates to 25 fps (the later seems to work better) but still after spending this much I was hoping for better..2. I have installed FSPS - Xtreme FSX Booster hoping to fix the issue but this does not seem to improve anything.3. even when the FPS is running at 25 I get these strange checkered effect patterns flash up while flying around,4. Selecting to view 2d main panel results in a flickering mouse and no visible pannel, I have read up on this and have tried the panel .cfg tweaks which resize the main panel but they did not work for me..The way I had to get around it is by turning off the eyefinity and running as a single main monitor, then use shift 1 to display the main panel, undock it move it to the extended monitor, save the aircraft, shut down FSX and restart eyefinity and fsx and load the aircraft and then the main panel appears.5. Tweaking? I have seen alot of posts reguarding activating cores in the cfg by using [JobScheduler] AffinityMask=14 I tried it but did not see an improvement and I am unsure if this was just for earlier tweaking befoer FSX gold and acceleration sp1 and 2 which is waht I am using. So what tweaks if any should be used with a system like mine? Maybe Iam just asking to much out of the system running at 5400 x 1980 but I suppose I should see what framerates I get running on a single monitor at 1980x1080 then expand to 3 monitors and so on.. But hopefully someone has an idea so I can make use of a 5x1 setup..
December 14, 201114 yr I think you are asking too much from your system to drive that from one. I can run mine at ~6000x1080 and framerates are ok but you have double that resolution. I am curious why you have 2x6970's and the 6870? I know the 6870 is the one you are using because it has the eyefinity 6 but you cannot use the other two inthat configuration unless it's driving another monitor outside of your eyefinity group. You must be close to your power supply limit as well, watch out for strange things happening with your computer. If they do, have a think about the PS.
December 15, 201114 yr Author Good eye, Spotted the extra graphics cards :), when I first built the system I intended to usethe 2 6970 in crossfire on 3 screens, once I decided I wanted 5 screen eyefinity the 6870 was the only one I could find with 5+ outputs as the 6970 can only do 4 outputs and you cant setup eyefinity accross 2 cards..So I settled with the 6870 for the 5 screen eyefinity, and one of the 6970's for the 2 extended monitors to display guages.I spent the afternoon yesturdaytesting the various card combos using 3d mark vantage, 6870 on its own 8000+, 6970 on its own 11,500+, 2x 6970 in crossfire 22000+ I was intending to check the different FPS in FSX using the different cards. I got as far as testing one of the 6970's with a single 1920x1080 monitor which was getting a good 30fps with all settings maxed so I attached 3 monitors in eyefinity.. frame rate dropped to 6fps not good, so I switched back to a single monitor but still only got 6fps.. tried loads of things but I must have corupted something and I couldnt get fps above 13 fps so decided to reinstall windows and FSX and start again..Hopefully have some results later.
December 16, 201114 yr OK, good luck with it. With 3 screen eyefinity on my 6970 (3x1920x1080) I can get ok framerates but it can drop to ~15 at times.
December 17, 201114 yr Author Thankyou, I had to start over new windows install re overclock the pc ect ect... Tried single 6870 gpu which got a 3dmark score of 7869, and single 6970 with a 3dmak score of 11,300 and crossfire 6970's with a 3d score of 28,104 which with my I7 2500k over clocked to 5ghz, gave me a total 28,707 which according to 3dmarks score results puts me in the top 5 for gamers using my cpu and gpu combination so at least I know my setup is running well.Next test was to install FSX, I started out with single screen 1920x1080, then moved up to 3x1 portrait eyefinity on the croddfire 6970's and then 5x1 portrait using the 6870 eyefinity, Result --- there was no noticible change in FPs which are fairly stable at 33fps between the 2 6970 crossfire 3x1 and the single 6870 5x1 so I can see that crossfire does not help in FSX but that being said eyefinity does not cause a decress in frame rate between 3x1 and 5x1 setups..So know I think I will get the new ASUS 6970 6 screen edition and crossfire that to one of my other 6970's and sell the 6870 and the spare 6970.. Although it does not make anydifference to FSX some other games may benefit..and after all this used FSX for an hour last night and being that close to all 5 screens made me feel a bit queasy LOL but the immersion is fantastic..But now I am looking into curved screens and projectors..
March 21, 201214 yr Hope my reply is still relevant. After several months of tweaking and investing in new HW I can conclude [in my case] that what you buy these days is already overkill to make FSX work smoothly.I added 16G DDR3 4-channel memory at the highest speeds I could get, I bought the Radeon 6950 video card, I7, water-cooling. I over clocked to 5G. Used all tweaks know to mankind : It does not make any difference. The reason is that FSX is an antique piece of software and the main SW module will only use one core. Adding better/faster HW and clocking higher just lowers the load on that core [to 60% in my case with scenery setting super high, ORBX weather extreme]. In the airport and on the ground I only get 12fps. While flying I get 25-30fps.But... I then bought FSPS, started it before loading FSX, click on the standard provided settings and BINGO... I get 25fps on the ground and 45+ fps in the air.And that is with fantastic weather/clouds making this a super realistic experience.I have 3 monitors attached using Eyefinity and Wideview on.I have a second video card driving a 30'' at 2560x1600 resolution for the overhead panel.But...that does not work...and maybe somebody can help. I select the overhead panel in the FSX pull down menu and it does not appear. All other panels work and I can drag them to the 30'' monitor [configured as extended].The 'hand mouse symbol' appears, flickers and the frames go down to 6 fps.Nothing can resolved this and I have to restart FSX.Thanks for any advice...Edgard
