February 10, 200422 yr For use in FS2004 ... can anyone cleverer than me advise whether the new Alaska/Canada mesh by Rob Gainer is a better bet than the FS2002 Alaska mesh by Eddie Denney that I've been using to date? February 10, 200422 yr Eddie has two different meshes for AK - the most recent is higher resolution than his previous one.The Rob Gainer mesh goes only as far North as Ketchikan (for the time being), and appears to be similar to Eddies' High res. mesh.Schofi
February 10, 200422 yr Thanks, Schofi. I can only trace the 16-part FS2002 mesh from Eddie, which is the one I have installed; was the high-res one payware?Anyway, if Rob's is limited in coverage for now, maybe I'll wait on.Mark "Dark Moment" Beaumonthttp://www.swiremariners.com/newlogo.jpg _________________________ Mark "Dark Moment" Beaumont VP Fleet, DC-3 Airways Team Member, MAAM-SIM
February 10, 200422 yr Mark - the 16 part one is the better Hi-Res one anyway of Denneys - there was also a payware one but know nothing about it
February 10, 200422 yr I have the payware and believe it is essentially the same as the freeware downloads...just more convenient on a cd...it also includes mesh for the rest of the world..so it is a pretty big endeavor.Sherm
February 10, 200422 yr Commercial Member Howdy:I have just checked Rob Gainer's AK mesh file (with the mesh viewing utilities) and it has serious problems, which is one of the reason why the files are much larger than they should be. I have contacted Rob to let him know.In general, the higher the latitude, the bigger the problems with mismatches with elevations (lake, airports) and locations, (lake and ocean shorelines). This is true for all add-on mesh, freeware and payware. It's not the fault of the mesh designer but it's difficult to address. Moreover, the higher the mesh resolution, the more visible those problems become (e.g., in SE Alaska, the Denney high-res FS2002 mesh looks worse than his mid-res FS2000 mesh; don't know about the payware products but don't think they are any different). Some of you may know that Gilles Gauthier and myself are to date the only ones to have made attempts at fixing these issues for add-on mesh of northern North America. For example, my LOD7 SE Alaska mesh (bcmesh7a.zip) was adjusted in position to best match the fjord's shorelines, and my B.C./AB Rockies' mesh includes fixes for all lake elevations. In a few days I'm going to upload an add-on mesh of the Glacier Bay/Juneau area, which includes a complete replacement of the shorelines and lakes, made possible by a new utility in development by Jim Keir.Cheers, HolgerP.S.: Ummm, just realized that this sounds a heck of a lot like bashing others while praising myself ;-) Sorry, but this post was meant to be constructive!
February 10, 200422 yr Thanks for the clarification Holger. I trust your judgement and was wondering about this product as well, especially since he mentions your work along with it. With so many trying to produce files for FS nowadays it is hard to know whch ones are quality.Regards, MichaelKDFWhttp://www.calvirair.com/mcpics/PBTMCa.jpgCalVirAir International VACougar Mountain Helicopters & Aviation[link:www.cgrmthelos.com]Cougar Mountain Helicopters Best, Michael KDFW

He was a great pilot , I flew many times with him and he flew with me.That little C 152 did alot of Ontario , Canada bush flying...He loved MS FS , but nearing the end, he could not afford the payware version of Ak Mesh. I made the Ak for him, he died like I stated before he could ever see it.The entire state of AK is done , however is being released in parts.Tonight saw 3 parts, a , b , c each time see's a greater area. The errors Holgers speaks of is true, there is some...the work is checked , however when I look into it now, I found that odd looking area(s) are had only when MESH ( HGT ) file compilation wasnt present. In other words, at these resolutions the higher you go, the more prne you will see an area where no mesh is present, its very clear.A fix is avail soon.Took me a few days to figure out why, but its done and as stated that fix will be out after the entire package is avail. Now there isnt a whole lot of errors , and I too downloaded Mr . Dennys fine work...in my opinion , and many others..it looks the same.3 min arc is 3 min arc....no matter how ya slice it.Ive got hundreds of happy emails from folks all over the world, no reduced frame rates is one happy line....others is simply " Very Nice " .Seattle Mesh also saw an increase in frames , by 1 - 3 reported by other users of my mesh for that area. The idea for my mesh was to release in parts, fly it low n slow.VFR mainly, but low n slow. Now to other things, once complete ,its doubtfull Ill re do or add anymore mesh.It takes alot of time and takes away from my personal life , while its true I am retired , a husband....fater of 3 and a grandfather of 1.....my time is valubale to those whom I love.lil fyi : I date back to FS , since Bruce Artwicks , Sublogic Flight Simulator II That was the reason for the avaiatin bug, it also got me to get my tail to a Cessna training center in 1981.Many yrs later.......no regrets.Cheers!Robert Gainer B.,Law
