uploading modified freeware package

Featured Replies

gentlemen, here's a question...recently, i have spent a couple of nights on a true labor of love: refitting the panel and the virtual cockpit of geforce cessna 150. i like the bird, i always liked 150's, and i think the gforce guys did a truly amazing job. however, as some of you may know, despite the great overall effect and the beautiful external model, the original cockpit left a little to be desired.the question is: can i share my toy with others, for example, by uploading it to avsim? apart from my own meagre contributions, this version uses components created by others: ilya prokhorenko (excellent vintage gauges) and carenado (152 freeware panel update).gforce could not be reached for comments. are they still above ground?a penny for your thoughts...vilk

Well as far as im aware, as long as there are no stipulations with any of the components that you are using that prevent you from uploading them then they should be ok. Mind you unless you are selling the modifications then there shouldnt be a problem, not being a lawyer, yet:), i am not 100% sure but it should be fine. To be sure you might as well contact the original authors of the components and run it past them, cant go wrong then....James

What do the licenses for the other packages state as far as modifications and re-distributions?

thanks, ken. i forgot to mention the licenses... yes, i read them and they all agree to free distribution. but geforce... actually, it's pretty scary!"THIS AIRCRAFT IS FREEWARE. NO MODIFICATION FOR DISTRIBUTION WITHOUTEXPRESS PERMISSION OF AUTHOR IS ALLOWED. DO NOT EDIT ANY OF THECONTENTS IN THIS PACKAGE. DO NOT USE ANY OF THE FILES INCLUDED INTHE PACKAGE WITHOUT THE EXPRESS AUTHOR PERMISSION. DO NOT MAKE MONEYWITH THIS AIRCRAFT OR ANY OF ITS COMPONENTS!"the caps are from gforce.... i did modify the eyepoint in aircraft.cfg... I'M DEAD MEAT!some of their textures bear more than a casual resemblance to those in other packages, but hey, they have the right to stop the buck, it's their model. a good one, too.i guess that answers my question... pity, she's such a sweet little ladybug.thanks guys!vilk

"Mr. Vilk?""Ummm. Yes?""We're with the FBI... Do you recognize this Cessna?""No. Not anymore. Viewpoint is all wrong.""Would you come with us, sir."You never know, vilk - one of the old GeForce crew might surface with an offer to check out your modified version...and of course endorse the wonderful work in the spirit of the community. One can hope!Best,sg

It's always polite and respectful to at least ask permission from the authors involved. Some may be offended that their creative vision is infringed--there's some authors who want their product distributed with a simple cockpit especially if they had the "framerate challenged" in mind with their original work.It can also create a mess of support issues when work gets modified. One author modified my Malibu Mirage package (with my permission).... Problem is, that killed off the V/C and I had several dozen emails complaining that the Mirage had no V/C.... Kind of tough to deal with when you don't get paid for that level of support... Anyway, when it doubt, and if you respect the original author, seek their blessing whether it's stated in the EULA or not...-John

gridley, i'm gonna have nightmares...:)john, i'm totally with you. i have generated enough "creative" output myself in the past twenty odd years to understand and agree. one, perhaps the most important, reason for my post was trying to get in touch with the gforce folks. if it doesn't work, oh well, we've been through worse...:)thanks again, all who replied.i guess the topic is closed.vilk

Hey vilk - There is yet another alternative. Post the description and steps needed to effect the changes you made along with any original file that you created. State in the upload that these need to be applied to the "geforce Cessna.../..." etc. You're not in violation of their EULA that way. Much like the textures only files for payware.Just MHO,Vic

sorry, i started with their original template, and since i have already flushed my photoshop history queue...;)

My suggestion would be a workaround of the EULA that the gforce fellas have included. I would upload a simple txt file(or pdf, or .doc) with instructions on how to do the modifications to the package that you have done. I would have the users download all the needed files, and then change the eyepoint, and change the panel.cfg to include the gauges that you have added.A bit of a cheat, but hey....;)

Is this aircraft still available somewhere? I've never been able to find it.ThanksDavid

Got it! Thanks a lot VilkDavid
