February 13, 200422 yr How do you install landclass in FS2004? Do you make a folder called "landclass" and put it in the Addon scenery folder? Or do you put the bgl files in the addon/scenery folder?
February 13, 200422 yr It is important to note that a "Texture" folder must _not_ be present within a Landclass Scenery folder sub-system therefore you can't expect them to function if placed into the Addon Scenery folder. Thus, it is better to create a separate "Landclass" / Scenery folder under the Main FS Scenery folder: FS/Scenery/Landclass/Scenery and then place the files within this folder.
February 13, 200422 yr Yep that's how I do it, Barney ... although I'm sure Havoc's technically right, if they go in SCENERY/BASE then you don't know what you've installed and can't replace it easily later should you want to (there are often updates). I place my SCENERY/LANDCLASS folder just above all MS default stuff but below all other add-ons. Works a treat.Mind you in FS2002 I just had them all (and I mean, ALL, millions of the buzzards) in the SCENERY folder without any subfolder. Also worked just fine.So why am I posting? It all works.Mark "Dark Moment" Beaumonthttp://www.swiremariners.com/newlogo.jpg _________________________ Mark "Dark Moment" Beaumont VP Fleet, DC-3 Airways Team Member, MAAM-SIM
February 13, 200422 yr Hovac is right. ( Here we go again!) Landclass should be placed in the FS9sceneryBASEscenery folder. Memory leaks can occur in the other way of installing it.But... If you wnat to do it that way, It will work.. But... If your sim slows down after about 15 to 30 minutes ( Depending on the memory you got)thats why.Joe W.
February 13, 200422 yr Hi all.Actually, Barney is right. There's nothing wrong with Havoc's suggestion, as it should work fine... But what if you want to control the order of which addon landclass overrides the others? For example, you have Justin Tyme's US landclass, but also have a small local landclass that you want to use over that. You then need to use the Scenery Library to control that. Make a project folder, with a 'scenery' sub-folder inside. The landclass goes into the 'scenery' sub-folder, the project folder can be added with the Scenery Library, and you can control the priority from the Scenery Library. There is no memory leak unless you also have a 'texture' sub-folder in your project folder. Designers using Ground2K4 have been including small landclass files without 'texture' sub-folders all along. But, a local 'texture' sub-folder is allowed if it contains ALL the needed landclass texture sets used, and should also contain ALL the autogen ( used or not )... properly named, of course. The memory problem is caused by the sim searching for the texture locally, and not releasing the memory from that failed search. If the needed textures ARE in the local 'texture' sub-folder, then there is no memory leak becasue the search stops before there is a problem... there was never a failure. If there never is a local 'texture' folder, then there isn't a failure, either. In FS2002 and CFS2, the use of a local 'texture' folder missing some used textures results in large green or brown squares on the terrain... but no memory leak. This technique of using a local texture folder allows the use of alternate textures ( if properly named ) in a controlled area... great for waterclass color adjustments ( which also require no autogen either ).This problem with landclass is forcing scenery designers to release their scenery with 2 project folders... one allowing textures and one not allowing them. February 13, 200422 yr "Memory leaks can occur in the other way of installing it."I know you prefer the scenerybase methods, but I have to correct you regarding the memory leak issue--it only happens if you place a texture folder along with the scenery subfolder in the folder where the landclass is installed if the alternative method is used.Since we both create landclass, I know the reasons for suggesting the scenerybase method of installation--it makes it a heck of alot easier to support our users over the other method. Installing landclass in its own folder when incorrectly done can cause memory leaks and worse, missing textures. Other than that, this is not a "here we go again" scenario, or a "right or wrong" scenario. And feeding misinformation to users won't help...Author, Landclass Assistant (which I know YOU know, but those who don't at least will understand that I know what I am talking about :) )
February 13, 200422 yr Howdy,Kinda like Barney's way, now that it's been brought to my attention. :-) Although Dick's suggestion has it's merits, too. :-lol As I intend installing Flight 1's "Islands of the West Indies" series (when it's updated to CoF), Dick's suggestion of seperate, prioritised LC folders (sans "texture" :-))will aid considerably when it comes time to "switch" the default caribbean scenery on/off.Thanks for the idea, guys.
February 13, 200422 yr Thanks all :-)Good thing I waited for some responces, I was just going to put them in the addon/scenery folder!
February 13, 200422 yr Hi Joseph.Just remember to put them into a 'scenery' sub-folder that has no twin 'texture' sub-folder ( unless the author specifies a 'texture' sub-folder and provides the textures.. not a common method ).The FS9SceneryBasescenery sub-folder will work, but there are other ways that allow more layer control. Dick
February 14, 200422 yr Thanks, Dick and John. This has been an ongoing issue for about 2 years. In the future, I'll provide a separate folder for the Landclass and let them place them either in the sceneryBASEscenery or the entry like normal scenery with the texture folder. Placing the Florida Landclass first, starting the sim, and then the Genesis Landclass in that order into the sceneryBASEscenery seem to control the way it's shown very well. FS9 is much like FS2002 in that respect. First in gets shown over later placementsThanks Again,Joe W.
February 14, 200422 yr Author I have mine installed under add on scenerylandclassscenery*.bgl with no texture folder.I think it is working. Is this not an OK way to do it?Thanks,Ron Bring back Chief Illiniwek!University of Illinois.
