Is it time for new thermal paste?

Featured Replies

Ever since I built this computer my temperatures have been terrible but recently I noticed that my temperatures are just unacceptable. I just got done with a BF3 gaming session and according to my realtemp it spiked 67C on the hottest core @ 3.7ghz. Is it time for new paste or is the H70 cooler not as good as people are saying?I know my antec 300 isn't helping with airflow but it does still seem higher than it should be.

Well, if temperatures have always been terrible, then you didn't do a very good job in the first place. If temperatures are going higher, that could mean that your case and fans need a GOOD cleaning. Also, you are overclocking, so temperatures of course are going to be higher. Return to stock speed and voltage and see what you get.Remove your side cover and watch your temps.Thermal paste is good for years and really doesn't wear out quickly.

As Jim said, it sounds like you may not have seated the cooler correctly on the CPU. A reseat is in order. Before you do that, what voltage are you at?

I do agree that it needs a cleaning and that'll be happening this weekend as I'll be moving all my parts into my new 600T.Zach I was at 4.4ghz with a manual voltage of 1.31 but last night I hit load optimized defaults in the bios and its now at 3.7 with I am not sure the voltage and it still goes into the 60s after a minute of prime95Right now I have the fans setup so it exhausts out the back of the case. I should probably check to see if they are going the same direction. With reseating the hs do I need to reapply thermal compound?

Ooohh That looks better than the MX2. According to some of the MX4 reviews they are saying its easier to apply than the mx2.

Guys, I hate to bring an old top back but I just got my 600T case today and just finished transferring everything over. I just started prime 95 and it has been running for about 2 minutes and its only at 55C at stock but keep in mind with the old Antec 300 I had, it would shoot up to 70C+ almost right away. Next Tuesday I will be re applying some thermal compound I bought and see if I see even more of a drop in temps.By the way this 600T is a HUGE upgrade from that old budget antec 300 case.

Chocolate. Nice.To Taylor: I believe any differences you see in temps after the thermal compound change will be coincidental. ie more related to a better or worse seating of the heat sink. Unless you bought something hugely different.

Ya I bought the Mx-4 but now that I have this new case I may not apply it although one of my screws on my H70 pump is not threading into the backplate thing at all.

It should! Are the other screws too tight and pulling the pump unit to one side? Before tighting the screws, you should have threaded all of them loosely.

I did that but when I first installed it the screw like stopped going in all the way. The thread or the adapters threads are broken or I am not putting it in correctly. It seems the pump is centered but not sure if its even, its kind hard to tell. I guess I can tell for sure when I remove the pump and basing it off how the thermal compound moved.

Just an update. I replaced the thermal compound changed the rad fans to intake air from the outside, took off the resistors for the fans that I had on temporarily and fixed the mounting of my pump and now after 25 minutes of prime I am getting about 58 61 60 and 60 max temps. I am sure they will go up a little bit after a while. A few good things I am seeing from these numbers though. First they are closer together which to me means the chip has a more even covering and second they are lower than before I replaced the compound. Before I was getting high 60s to low 70s with my 4.6ghz overclock and now I am getting low 60s.
