Unhappy with overclocking results i5 2500k

Featured Replies

HiI recently overclocked my i5 2500k to 4.2 Ghz used with 560ti card. Not a massive increase I know but its hard to get a stable overclock much higher. I am a bit disappointed with the results, sat on the runway at Heathrow payware add on FPS were only up by 2 FPS, from 22 on standard to 24 when overclocked. Is this what I should of expected ?

You did not indicate your MB but here's an excellent guide for 3 different MB's up to 4.5GHz that might help - http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cpus/2011/01/07/how-to-overclock-the-intel-core-i5-2500k/1. You might still need to lower/tweak your scenery sliders or lower AI settings further to get more FPS. But 24 fps is very good IMHO for heavy hitters like Heathrow. Turn off your AI settings completely and see what fps you get to see if that is eating up your frames then slowly move them back up to an acceptable level. Also, defrag. FSX and addons throw files all over a HDD. That might give you a couple more frames alone.Best regards,Jim

Thanks for the reply Jim. I noticed in your system specs you are overclocked to 4.4 Ghz. Did you notice a big improvement in FPS compared to your standard i7 ? Perhaps I am expecting too much. I am happy with what I have got but I would of thought I would of got a lot better FPS by overclocking. My board is a Gigabyte GAz68XP. I have seen that guide before, it is really useful. Thanks again.Paul

I don't know Paul. I don't recall using FSX without the overclock. Did you look at some of the benchmarks set in the pinned post at the top of this forum? I think there was some discussion of fps based on CPU.Best regards,Jim

Paul, if you are referring to UK2000 Heathrow, I use that as a benchmark for a lot of tweaking tests. If you look at my sig it will give you an idea of what I get. With frames locked at 30 and AG set at normal, I get 24fps. Besides, you have done a moderate OC and gained effectively a 10% increase which is probably about right. Besides, it doesn't matter what your frames are (to a point) it's about smoothness. I have always found that good tweaking of the cfg file has always brought higher performance benefits than an OC. Having said what I have said about my test scenario, this is conducted in the VC of the NGX, with REX 2, UTX, GEX Europe and MTX pro. Monitor resolutions at 1920x1200. Cheers.
