It bypasses the software poolsystem which stores the data CPU is going to give the GPU for processing and makes the CPU give the GPU data directly - thus danger of artifacting and crashing is increased - also the reason why GPU has to be as powerful as they only get, due to massive overclocking and speed of CPU.

Interesting that this tweak works so well for me despite me only having a single GTS450.

Well, it's what has been thought in the past. We might have been wrong or you also might have settings that don't overload the GPU.
