An airport with only a landing strip

Featured Replies

I have landed at an airport in northern Canada and found that it only had a landing strip. No buildings or refueling facalities.Exist such airports in real life or is this just an example of incomplete data in FS9?

Welcome to the world outside the US :)I suspect that the vast majority of airfields in the world are represented ths way, they certainly are in my part of the world.

Lots like that in real life.Dave

>Lots like that in real life.>But what is the point with only a landing strip? What are you supposed to do there?Another thing that not make sense is that I could use my ATC and choose I runway for landing. How can this be made with the radio if noone is there?

In some parts of the world ( EG alaska, Northern Canada- and even in more populated places ) there are many unattended strips that are just that - a landing strip and nothing else - sometimes just a rough gravel strip - no people - no fuel - no radio. You land at your own risk and hope nothing goes wrong.Dave

In my case the airport was Qiqiqtarjuaq near a city with the same name. My idea was to land here to refuel and rest. I have travelled from Sweden to here in a Cessna 172 by landing at airports on the way.If FS9 data is correct this means that my journey would end hereif the fuel won't get me to another airport. What do you think about it. From sweden to the North American continent in Cessna in real weather. Could iy be done for real?

Most airports in far-Northern Canada are just simple landing strips. They are only there to provide food, fuel, and mail to remote Inuit villages. If you want some proper airports in Canada's north, try Whitehorse, Yellowknife, or Iqaluit which are the capitals of the three Territories.

Hi>If FS9 data is correct this means that my journey would end>here if the fuel won't get me to another airport.IRL you could at least hike to the town and get a canister with fuel.>What do you think about it. Have a look at the picture below. There is only a gravel strip and nothing else. We landed here, taxyed off the side of the strip onto a flat area that had been cleared of scrub and waited for a bus (pre-arranged) to the nearest town (10 km away) where we were to do a presentation an hour later. The town had a pop of around 250 people and was about 300Nm away from the Capital city where I live. This is the reality of much of the aviation facilities in regional Australia.Hope that provides some insight.http://members.iinet.net.au/~portercbp/fly.../Dsc01825_2.jpgChris Porter:-outtaPerthWestern AustraliaMy "Around the World 4" flight pagehttp://members.iinet.net.au/~portercbp/fly...e%20World_4.htm

I see landing strips all over the place in the U.S. I imagine some of those strips are also for emergency diversions.Chris

You mentioned that you can call on the radio and choose a runway, announce your postion, etc... this is correct. While there may not be an FBO or attended tower at the small strip, any and all aircraft in the area that may be using that strip will tune to a certain frequency, the UNICOM is listed on the charts and maps, for that airstrip. So when you use that frquency, you're not talking to the tower, you're notifying anyone in the area that is tuned to that frequency of your intentions and location. Also.... there may be more than one airstrip in the area that uses that same frequency. My wife is from Whitehorse in the Yukon and I've spent some time there, trust me..... lots of strips in the real world have nothing but a grass strip and your lucky if the windsock is still there.Hope this helpsCheersDave

If you were to do this for real you'd want to plan ahead to figure out where to stop to refuel. You would get a copy of one of the many Airport and Facility Directories (AFDs) that describe the facilities at each airport. A popular on-line site in the US is www.airnav.com. It lets you put in an identifier and get back information on the facility.By the way, you can tell which airports in FS have fuel and which don't by looking at the GPS or map dialogs. The airport symbols that have four small squares outlining the circle have refuelling facilities.
