Hanging while loading terrain

Featured Replies

I have a problem when creating flights to start at certain airports in the caribbean.FS9 starts to load but hangs when it tries to load terrain (loading bar at around 12%). I have installed a couple of caribbean mesh, landclass and scenery files as well as enhanced water textures and thought that the problem must lie in some corrupted files. So what I did was deleting all caribbean addon sceneries and let Fs9 recompile the scenery.cfg. Unfortunately this approach did not remedy my problem. Fs9 hangs in the caribbean no matter whether I use addon scenery for that area or not.I prefer not to make a complete reinstall of FS9. Any ideas? Does somebody know where on the FS9 disks the standard scenery for the caribbean area is located? Roland

Which airports does it happen at exactly? Maybe it's a generic FS2004 problem?

It's not so much at specific airports. It seems all islands from Jamaica and the Dominican Republic all the way down to Trinidad and Tobago are affected. Cuba and the area north of it are fine!It cannot be a FS9 generic problem since up until a couple of weeks ago I had no such problems in that area. Most probably it must have been a corrupted add-on scenery file doing the damage and that's why I am looking for help about how to do a reinstall of the generic caribbean scenery without having to do a complete reinstall.Any ideas?Roland

Hello,When I have that kind of problem it's due to a Landclass .bgl file that is mixed with scenery .bgl .Example :XX Airport folderscenery folder : where there is a LANDCLASS .bgl mixed whith other .bgl filesTexture folder This Landclass . bgl file(s) MUST be in a separate folder with lower priority and NO texture folderNot easy to findGood luck

Roland,This is a real shot in the dark, but a quick check just to rule something out. Check in your effects folder and see if the three nova smoke files were installed with this scenery. Your computer may have no problems handling these files, but mine hangs during scenery loading or on flying to a scenery that uses them every time when I have them installed. Also, check your event log under Applications to see if you can pin down which file (.exe, .dll, etc.) is causing the hangs.Kevin

Kevin,I have more than one smoke file in my effects folder. How do I know which ones are the Novas?Roland

They will be named nova_smoke_one, nova_smoke_two, and nova_smoke_three. If they are present, I'd recommend cutting and pasting them to another folder outside of FS for safekeeping so you can put them back if the problem still occurs once you're done testing by attempting a flight without them in the effects folder.Kevin

Howdy,Are you running the recently released Antilles 2004 scenery? Reason I ask is that I'm now getting scenery reloads (FS quits to scenery load % bar) during flights in the area covered by said scenery. Really beginning to hack me off, too. FYI: Caribbean (and all) scenery is located on Disk #4.

This sounds more like a mesh problem, not a landclass problem. Landclass problems will not, most of the time, not crash the sim at loading... Maybe later in flight from the memory leak, but not at loading.I would check that.Joe W.

Joe,I think you are right. I am now trying to find this f....ing mesh file hidden somewhere in the depth of FS9! Roland

Do a search on your FS9 folder and subfolders for files named scenery.dat, then sort them in date order. The most recent scenery.dat files will point you to the folders where the most recent bgl's have been added. Then sort those by date order in turn. Most of the default COF .bgl files will fall into a Jan-May '03 time frame. Newer ones and older ones are likely files you've missed. The scenery.dat trick is helpful for finding add-on bgl's because MSFS rebuilds this file whenever it detects a new bgl, even if no entry has been made in the scenery.cfg. A scenery.dat file can be found in virtually all scenery folders...Regards,John

I did the search as told. The most recent scenery.dat was the one in the FS9/Scenery/NAME folder!!! That's the generic FS9 scenery for the eastern US, isn't it?Since my problem started in the caribbeans it must be that the NAME scenery files do cover part of the caribbeans as well.Anyhow I deleted this very scenery.dat file, started FS9 and let it rebuild the file. Again FS9 would hang at startup pretending not to having enough memory.I then deleted the whole NAME folder and put it somewhere else. Now I can start the sim alright but obviously without having access to eastern US and caribbean airports. I am pretty sure that it was the recently released Antilles scenery doing all the damage and even though I have deleted this scenery there might still be some hidden sleeper scenery *.bgls around I cannot find. It's a self-install scenery so the user has no clue about what files are being installed and where. Avoid such sceneries! Can somebody tell me how the make a reinstall of the whole NAME folder. It's not on CD4 and I couldn't find it on the other CDs either. The guys who did the Antilles scenery could help me out by letting me know what's actually being added/overwritten during the install. Any other ideas are as always very much appreciated. I am becoming quite desperate and my wife is not happy at all...!!Roland

The NAME folder is on CD #3. It's embedded in a CAB file, a compressed file format that can be opened with Winzip among other utilities. It can be found in MsGame8.cab...In my post above, I didn't say anything about deleting the scenery.dat file or deleting the entire folder! The scenery.dat file is just an index which is built whenever a new bgl is detected. You should have browsed the NAME folder and looked for bgls that didn't fall into the date range I discussed above.Hopefully your reinstall of the NAME folder will solve the problem...-John

John,I have only removed the NAME folder in order to find out whether I can get FS9 to run again, since it has been the NAME scenery.dat which was the most recent, and you were right. Once that folder is gone I can get back into FS9.But as soon as I put the NAME folder back in, FS hangs at startup showing the usual lack of memory error.I will now try to extract and install the folder anew from CD#3.Fingers crossed!Roland
