Hello All,I've been searching around in the forums and having a little trouble finding the info that I'm after. I just can't seem to get my Go Arounds the way I like them, mainly my speed is sky rocketing.Here's a brief sequence of events during my procedures1. Manual Flying on final (ATS engaged entire time) (Vapp), alt set for missed approach2. Decide to Go Around3. Press TOGO4. Gear Up5. Flaps 286. Using flight director7. Problems start here with speed. My speed increased very quickly (too quickly jumping to 270 very fast). I still have ATS engaged Should I press autopilot? I don't mind hand flying. Do rotate speed knob to desired GA speed?I'm really at a loss on what I'm doing wrong. I appreciate any insight and let me know if my issues is not clear.Cheers, Chris K.

The whole point of a go around is to get away from the ground. That sounds self-explanatory, but it seems as if you aren't fully understanding that point here (and I'm not saying that to make fun of you). When you select TO/GA, ATS commands GA thrust, which is a LOT of thrust. The problem is that it seems you're not properly managing that thrust. This isn't a leisurely pitch-the-nose-up-a-little-for-a-walk-around-the-pattern, it's up-and-out.-Press TO/GA-Positive rate Gear Up-Flaps as necessary-Follow the FD (which will be operating in a pitch-for-speed scenario, so you shouldn't be having probs with speed unless you're not following it)Also keep in mind that you're using more thrust than you're probably used to on takeoff (most people use derated thrust on T/O), and you're a lot lighter than most takeoffs, so the thing will quite literally be a rocket. That's also not mentioning that the deck angle on the plane is conspicuously high, which may be confusing you into a lower pitch angle to match other planes you fly in FS.When you get your pilot's license, one thing they'll hammer into your head is pitch for speed, so:Pitch for speed.

Kyle,Thanks for the feedback; it's just what I'm looking for.I do understand the point of the go around after watching the 100's of video's on the net but I think you nailed what I wasn't doing. I've been flying the MD-11 about 18 months but haven't practiced my go arounds too much.I don't think I was following the flight director, which I thought I was. I was getting caught up in the moment of making sure gear's up, flaps, etc...The MD-11 is about the only plane I've been flying for over a year and it did take some getting you used to the deck angle. Thanks for reiterating the point about my weight on landing; I think that is something that really is key that I need to pay more attention to.It's time for me to practice and pay more attention to the FD. Geez a rookie mistake but that's what I love about the forums and this plane.Thanks again for the feedback.Chris K.

Hey Kyle,Not sure if you are still around and reading this discussion. Did a practice, followed the Flight Director, and had no problems. What speed setting do you use on the GoAround and when do you usually engage it?Cheers, Chris K.

I don't recall a speed setting being issued. The MD-11 is best left on the ATS (autothrottle system) throughout the whole flight. That said, speed is managed by the FMS for the whole flight, so when you hit TO/GA, it should command a set speed and you just fly the flight director, retracting your flaps as you can (as you pass the flap setting indications on the speed tape).Engage TO/GA as soon as you determine you will need to go around.
