March 1, 201214 yr At least I'm pretty sure that's what it is; the angular tail-fin is distinct, although it's seen through wobbly binocs & I'm not the world's greatest expert on WW2 fighters. Has RAF roundels on it and angled yellow stripes on the wings, and it's been doing big circuits around our house for the last 20 minutes or so (we live on a hill and are fairly isolated).Living as we do not all that far from RAF Spadeadam I'm well used to aircraft action, but not to the sound of Merlin engines!Nice to see it anyhow, although I have no idea what it's doing up there.
March 1, 201214 yr Is there an airshow scheduled nearby this weekend? I live in a town with an airbase (KBED) which gets very little Air Force traffic. Every few years, though, we are treated to a weekend airshow. Watching both modern warbirds and vintage aircraft flying in on Friday and back out Sunday evening or Monday is an extra treat.Knowing the routine, sometimes I'll watch the practice drills by the Air Force Thunderbirds or Navy Blue Angels on Friday afternoon.

Around here would be a good area to practise in as it's a pretty empty part of England. Given our weather in winter though (despite being unusually mild right now), air-shows tend to happen more during the summer months. Certainly haven't heard of any so far. I think he might have just have spotted me with the binoculars as he did a couple of passes right overhead before reverting to the big circuits.EDIT: Well, just to add that since I posted the above, he's out there again, over the base itself this time doing tight high-G turns & swoops. I should add that the base has no airstrip as it's an electronic countermeasures practice area. I'm wondering if maybe the aircraft has just been overhauled and is being put through its paces prior to a future display. The Spadeadam area is pretty much uninhabited so it would be a safe place to do that (from the point of view of danger to ground-dwellers). Intriguing. Edited March 2, 201214 yr by Raindance
