I get the distress expressed here, but as hardware improves and develops, so does the software: that's life, sadly. My lady has knitting design software from the '90s that (probably) won't run on Win10, but she keeps an old computer with XP to use it with. Given that old PCs can be bought for peanuts, surely that's the way to go if you want to run old apps? Regarding Windows 10's alleged install-intrusiveness; I personally found that I didn't have to download it until I wanted to, so I don't understand how this forced install being complained of happened (not judging here, I just don't understand). For my 'puter the install went smoothly; for my lady's (other non-XP, identical machine to mine) it was a struggle; don't know why, but we got there. All in all I'm happy with Win10. It boots faster, and a lot of (very) old stuff I have still runs: MS is generally pretty good with back-compatibilty. Try that with Mac OS! Force shutdown by holding down the power button for a few seconds and, like, take that forced update! It picks up again when you switch on again.

That story has apparently been floating around, identically word for word, on the web for a while, and there are doubts as to its existence as anything other than a modern myth. Snopes currently classifies it as "undetermined", and other sites express skepticism. In Britain it'd be a good Bonfire Night get together (if it isn't raining), as it's usually pretty chilly in November. It might even light up the neighbourhood :lol: . Too hot in summer though.

That is almost entirely kinetic energy being converted to heat and light as the meteoroid is slowed by the atmosphere. Iron, for example, in the object would burn off (oxidize) at those temperatures but its contribution would be small.

"A tiny meteoroid punching through a wing tank like a cannon shell..." It would have slowed down to freefall speed by the time it reached the plane. Of course if the plane and the meteoroid collided then the plane's speed would itself be enough to cause major damage to the plane.

Well I guess he has the money to look after it. Very powerful engined aircraft; they are (by all accounts) tricky to fly, or even to get off the ground without tipping over, so he'll need those lessons. Good luck to him though.

Well pilot error seems unlikely, given the reported experience of the dead driver : David Traill, 51, from Stenhousmuir was the aircraft's civilian pilot. A former RAF flight lieutenant with over 20 years' helicopter flying experience, his military career included deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. He was a Chinook flight instructor before leaving the RAF to become a civilian pilot, joining Bond Air Services. He had worked with Strathclyde police and its successor, Police Scotland, for four years. Police helicopters: One started to appear over Newcastle upon Tyne (where I was living at the time) in IIRC, the nineties. The justification for its deployment was abatement of serious crime. Fair enough. But it soon became a nightly wake-up call at around 12:30am as the thing was increasingly deployed for no better reason than to monitor drunks milling around the town centre. It would hover for ages over the city centre and frankly, the bloody racket it made roaring on for ages, when I was trying to sleep, every other night or so was one of the reasons we eventually moved a long way out of the city. So it's worth asking why, and with due respect to the dead and injured, and after the technical inquiries have been satisfied as well as they can be, why was this helicopter in that particular location in the first place?

The crooks dip a toe in the water with a couple of minimal transactions with stolen card details to see if they get blocked, then go for the biggie if the little ones go through without a hitch. A friend had her details hacked once; the crook used it for a long distance flight and a fair-sized donation to some Catholic charity in Mexico (conscience money maybe?). The bank came through though and my friend didn't lose out.
