March 25, 200422 yr Hi all,I'd like to know if there's any possible way to tweak the cfg file to make t-storms more powerful. I love the new weather engine (and looks!) of FS9 wx, but I rarely hit any bumps or turbulence.I was a HUGE fan of Flight Unlimited 3's weather, and even though it didn't look very realistic, it made the plane respond to different conditions. I used to love the fact that I would AVOID t-storms, for fear that it would cause damage to the plane. The plane became difficult to control in storms, and the plane shook and rattled, even in simple windy conditions.I fly into the big, beuatiful t-storms in FS9, and the plane rarley even jostles. I want to get back to the days where I would avoid a route or approach because of the nast conditions, and I would wait until the storm passed.Am I just dreaming that there's something in the cfg files, or am I just going to have to live with this? Trust me, it's not bad, but I'd like to see some consequence and reaction for flying into a storm. Thanks in advance,TB
March 25, 200422 yr First, try the MCC Thunderstorm, Squall line, and/or Supercell Thunderstorm weather themes from http://www.weather-maker.com - these are some serious storms.Second, there is a parameter in FS9.cfg that is something like turbulence_scale=1.00000 - you COULD adjust that to something larger...not recommended if you use ActiveSky for real weather.Last, FSUIPC registered version has the ability to add turbulence in clouds.Enjoy the spring!Best,sg [email protected] | 32gb RAM | EVGA GTX1080 8gb | Mostly P3Dv5 (also IL2:BoX, DCS, XP11)
March 25, 200422 yr sg,Thanks for the quick response. I'll play around with that cfg setting, and see where that takes me. I use FSMeteo, with the registered version of FSUPIC, so I'll see how it effects that too.Perhaps turbulence is different for everybody, and degrees of turbulence are different too. Maybe those t-storms were TOO strong and unrealistic in FU3. I did try those awesome wetaher themes (I love the squall line) but I noticed the same thing...barely a bump, in a jet. I guess I'm just looking for a consequence for flying into that stuff, and a reason to alter my flight plan, like real life. No biggie.I think I'm a tad morbid, because I love that rough IFR stuff! : )Thanks again,TB

March 25, 200422 yr LOL!Good stuff vilk... [email protected] | 32gb RAM | EVGA GTX1080 8gb | Mostly P3Dv5 (also IL2:BoX, DCS, XP11)
March 25, 200422 yr One thing I *HATE* about FS9 is that the thunderheads themselves seem too small. Tiny little clouds spewing lightning bolts bigger than the cumulus. I think it was damian in the activesky forum that said something along the lines of thunderheads being limited to 18,000 feet (not altitude, but base to tops) - when I manually set weather, I have started making three thunderhead cloud layers base (2000 feet-ish) to 15000, 15001-25000, 25001-38000. Hits the FPS, but I feel like the storms are larger...Best,sg [email protected] | 32gb RAM | EVGA GTX1080 8gb | Mostly P3Dv5 (also IL2:BoX, DCS, XP11)
March 26, 200422 yr Just a little update. As suggested (thanks!), I raised the turbulence scale in the cfg file from 1 to 5 (.00000), just for starters. I set up a nice squall line, and flew the King Air into it. I noticed a bit of a difference, and when I flew the Citation X into the storm, there was a very slight increase in 'bumps'. I'll raise it more later to get what I feel is the correct amount of shop.My question, for real pilots and sim pilots is, do you find the default turbulence effects in FS9 realistic? Because I'm looking for extreme instability in storms, am I raising the level to a too UN-realistic level?
March 26, 200422 yr Author The weather engine does not do much to simulate the affects of a thunderstorm. Of course, in real life, we generally would just fly around or over them anyway. I try to do the same thing in the sim (the RealityXP weather radar helps immensely). ------------------------- Craig from KBUF
