Can add-on scenery be placed in another folder?

Featured Replies

Hey GuysI have a question for the X-plane Mavens.I would like to add some custom scenery to X-plane (the program is installed on my SSD), the scenery is larger than the capacity of the SSD, so is it possible to place it elsewhere and link to it?Specifically, I whacked up the whole state of Florida in G2xpl(yes, I donated to Rob...twice) at a high LOD, and it's 220 gigabytes. My SSD is only 256 GB, and with XPlane 10 and Flight on there, I am 10gb shy of my goal. Thanks

IMHO, the best option is to move the entire X-plane folder out from the SSD to wherever you have the additional space available, assuming of course you have enough space available, for present and future needs. The main drawback being the program may load more slowly than the SSD load !BTW, you can safely move the X-plane folder to a new location, since X-plane does not depend or write to the registry, assuming you have a Windows OS.

Yeah, I'm stumped, never heard of an ability to have multiple scenery drives. Fortunately, from what I've seen, there's not much difference in SSD vs HD load times (i've tried both). The best approach (in future!!) is to download discrete areas of your state and name them in the G2 ini file, so when you suck it all down, it goes into, say, 'G2xplFlorida1', 2 and so on. that way you can just copy and paste the main areas you fly over, from the HD to the SSD.

Windows Vista and 7 support symbolic linking http://www.windows7home.net/how-to-create-symbolic-link-in-windows-7/This way you can keep your Florida scenery on a hard drive and symlink it to your custom scenery folder on your SSD. Florida will load slower, but the upside is you don't have to clobber your xplane install or sacrifice the speed for other areas just to enjoy one state.
