March 30, 200422 yr Would it be worth my while unistalling FS9 and then reinstalling it and my addons to improve performance? Am I right in thinking that if you uninstall, it leaves 3rd party files on the system? Thanks Alaister Kay
March 30, 200422 yr I just did this last weekend. My performance was getting worse and worse, and was not consistent with what other people were getting. Now, my performance is much more stable and consistent. Not a huge difference, but better. Here is exactly what I did:-Make sure I had keys and updated download files for every addon I own (doing this ahead of time saves a whole lot of headaches later on)-Made a list of the addons which I was actually going to reinstall into the new install (I basically only installed what I was using) There were so many things which I just didn't fly anymore. If I ever decide to use them again, re-installation only takes a minute.-Copied the entire full FS2004 folder to a second hard drive (I just bought a 120 gig HD as a second drive)-Uninstalled any 3rd party addons which have uninstall routines (some worked, some didn't)-Uninstalled fs2004 -Manually deleted the entire fs2004 directory.-Ran a full drive defragmentation on that drive (Important step)-Reinstalled fs2004-Installed my addons using list and information from the first two steps-Ran a full drive defrag again (this wasn't really necessary)All in all, I got the whole process done in a Friday night. Kind of a pain, but now my fs is much cleaner. It loads faster, and performs better. Hope this helps, if you decide to take the plunge. ------------------------- Craig from KBUF
March 30, 200422 yr I actually renamed my old FS9.CFG (I had tried some tweaks) and gained back about 20 fps. YMMV
March 31, 200422 yr HiA while back I wrote a post called "Straight out of the box". Basically this was an argument that FS9 is probably as good as it can be just straight out of the box without addons etc.The replies that I got back where quite enlightening, but of course we are consumate tinkerers, and just love to addon, and addon. I recently stripped my FS9 drive down to nothing completely clean, devoid of anything bar it's drive letter (d).I then reinstalled FS9, nothing else and flew my good old Cessna. Excellent Framerates no stutter on landing, fab.I then reinstalled FSNavigator, still very good fms.Which addon would I choose next, well there was no contest really so on went my PMDG 737 NG.This was clearly the best piece of work I had done on my PC for ages, fms remains high and I have all sliders maxed. FMS is locked at 30 fps and I seem to be achieving this all the time. The only bit of advice I can give you is make sure that you have FS9 on a clean harddrive all of it's own, I know this can have a cost implication for some but a 40 gig hard drive would be more than adequate for all your addon needs and keeps everything in one place.Wycliffe
