Shimmering textures middle\far distance

Featured Replies

Hi

i think my pc is relatively fast. I have fps set at unlimited and get over 100 in the most detailed airports with ai traffic at 70%.

I use REX clouds

In the middle distance the scenery shimmers badly. It's really annoying.

In addition any straigh line, such as taxiway lines, or wing edge appears jagged.

I downloaded a utility- NvidiaInspector, but can't figure our which setting to use and how to save it..

Any ideas on hpw to correctt his?.

Shimmering problems are often to do with incorrect mip mapping settings in FS9 ,can't remember of hand the 'normal' setting ,but if you have a fiddle about you will hopefully see some improvement.(perhaps default setting)

Jagged edges can be smoothed by using Anti Aliasing (there seems to be the view that you should use your GCard for setting AA rather than FS9s own AA setting) I have used the default AA and it definitely smooths jagged edges ,but there is (as always with FS) a trade off in performance ,however if your PC is a modern machine (mine isn't so I don't use AA ) you should be OK .

Maybe there are other settings that you can tweak as well , perhaps others will chip in with there ideas.

Anyways some thoughts

cheers

Andy

Thanks for the input.

I'll play around with settings to see what happens.

The odd thing is that I run FSX on a high graphic level, and get no shimmering!

My FS9 mip map setting is 4 .(Default I think)

and I get no shimmer problems.

Tried mipmapping to the max, but shimmering persists.

most settings in FS can be shoved to the maximum with powerful PC ,but I don't think mip mapping is one ,try default or lowering and then checking till it looks OK.

As i said in previous post mine is set at four ,you could try that.

Using higher supersampling settings in Nvidia inspector will help. Reducing Mip in FS9 also reduces the texture quality. If you have a powerful enough Video Card you can use Nvidia inspector to reduce or eliminate it. Not sure a 9800 would take high AA settings without hurting performance?

Well, it seems that mipmapping at 4 does the trick.

The far distance looks unfocused, but that would happen normally in the real world, unless it's a rare unpolluted sky with excellent visiblity.

I can live with this compromise.

Glad you got it sorted.

Make sure you also have 'Extended terrain textures' and 'terrain detail land and water both checked as well.

(You probably have already) but both of these settings help with texture sharpness . I still get blurred scenery so it seems you cannot eliminate this problem completely. In my case blurries have never really bothered me ,its stutters that I dislike and smooth flight which I love.
