I now have exhaust smoke from aircraft, I can only assume I have installed an fx. file somehow.

Sounds like you hit the "i" key on your keyboard without realizing it. This is the defualt key for smoke if I'm not mistaken. Hit the "i' key again and see if the smoke turns off. It should. Hope this helps.

The easiest way would be to try the "i" button as Jeff already proposed.

 

If that doesn't work:

Did you install any add-on just before that started?

I have the same problem after installing some Razbam aircraft, I think. I mean I don't really bother, except for the trike, which is in a huge "cloud" of engine exhaust.

You should be able to turn it off, though, by either identifying and renaming the fx or in your aircraft.cfg (just put // in front of the [smokesystem] entry).
