Installing 16gb of RAM from my current 8?

Well, It wont help, but its cheap enough, so it gets you ready for Windows 7 / 8. I bet your ram usage hasn't passed 60% with 8Gbs.. I know mine hasn't yet, and ive run photoshop with fsx on long flights lol.

I would do it and setup a ram disk for some apps.

I think you should open your Start menu, type "Resource Monitor" into the search box and then run that app as you go about your daily activities to see if you even approach using all of your 8GB RAM. There's absolutely no point to buying more RAM if your system isn't going to use it. I have 8GB and currently I have 1.3GB still free with FSX running along with Firefox, tweetdeck, outlook, and a whole host of tray and system applications.
