I've been out of the hardware game for a long time. Looking to buy an i7 2600K + some Z68 mobo + few sticks of RAM + 5X0 GTX card. This looks like what most of you peeps are using anyway. I'm starting with an arbitrary budget of USD 800 (flexible). What would be the best combo with the most fluid FSX experience at this price point?

 

PS: Will be using it for - PMDG 737NGX, REX, GE Pro (or is it X), and a few airport addons.

With the parts you listed it will run you

$300 - 2600K

$150 - GB UD3 Z68 mobo

$430 - GTX 580

$70 - Mushkin 8GB cas 7

 

Then you still need a good psu, hard drive, monitor, case etc

Thanks. Quite flexible, lol, but I don't really want to spend a lot for maybe 10% more performance. I'm looking for the minimum that will give me a stutter free smooth FSX experience with constant 30 fps or more.

 

I'm not building a complete kit, just upgrading. I might need a PSU though. Currently I have GB Odin GT 550W.

Will this suffice considering I have 3 HD's (150gb raptor x, 1tb and 2tb wd green drives) and an optical drive?

Basically as a minimum you want:

 

i5 2500k (overclocked to 4.5GHz - don't forget a cooler, for you budget man I'd recommend coolermaster Hyper 212+ or Antec Kuhler 620)

gtx 560 ti

8gb ram ddr3 1600

Z68 mobo

 

I looked at your psu... In theory it should work fine. (4 12v rails @ 18A.... 492w / 12v = 41 Amps) The second you want SLI you'll need more juice (but it shouldn't be an issue since you said you're not a gamer)

 

Finally 30 fps stutter free will be possible with most addons. You can't max things out with addons and the above setup.. but if you realize you can run them very high and tone a few sliders down you'll be fine.

Just done building the new PC and I'm thrilled with the performance in FSX. Haven't overclocked yet, so there's still room for improvement.

The total amount spent was in excess of $ 1400. Since I am the project manager on this job, I will be firing myself for the budgetary over-run :D
