Maule " Low and Threatening" job

Featured Replies

I have now flown the longest job to date I have done in Flight.

Carried three passengers, from PHKO to PHPA.

I think the distance was around 246 nm. My total flight time for this job, came in around 1 hour and 40 minutes. My " no skip bonus" was 11,682 - not bad.

I recently changed my weather theme from fair, to " low and threatening". I like that much better, has some wind but not so severe it throws the Maule around. Plus I seem to be able to touch down the Maule more gently with a decent headwind.

Once I get to cruise, I can pretty much leave it for a few minutes and come back to it. I have to admit, kind of nice not having to worry about not responding to ATC and getting my flight plan canceled while I am away from my desk...

I don't know but for some reason I really enjoy doing these simple jobs. The lighting during some of this flight was just fantastic, I have included a couple of screenshots below. The only annoyance was the constant sniffing, sneezing, clearing of throats, coughing from the passengers - and this was not a medical flight! I think I would rather have the music play for the flight myself.

I think next on my hit list of things to do, will be finally learning about flying VOR, thanks to Jeroen's and some others feedback on that great VOR thread. Once I get that down, maybe then I will finally start doing some of the aerocache hunts. Flight has some faults and some things I really, really want to see - like Track IR support - but I am amazed at how much there is for me to do and enjoy, considering we still only have the Hawaiin Islands to play around on.

Awesome shots!!! And 'Low and threatening' is indeed the best theme around! I've been saying that for weeks: why didn't you listen earlier? It looks awesome but also offers variation during the flight: depending on how high you fly you get some haze/fog and sometimes you have some blue sky and then you get clouds all over. You get the impression the weather changes a little... which is nice.

You are very right about that sniffing etc.... That alone is enough to NOT fly a 246 nm job! (Well, actually, anything longer then some 80 nm is too boring for me...) It noticed that already during my fist passenger flight. It's nice getting comments and hearing things but that sniffing... hm... no.

Now go and learn all about VOR and then disable the destination marker: jobs are so much more fun without it! (Specially 246 nm jobs...!)

have you guys solved the parking spot problem yet?

I was wondering... is there always an ambulance on the medi flights? That would be one replacement for the parking spot problem.

Nope. None of the jobs provide any visual indication of where to park if you disable the Destination Marker. I wish they'd put something out on the ramp to mark the spot. Vehicle, lineman, heck, some orange cones even.

You can always hit "N" if you just can't find it, though.

The fun of actually find your own way to the destination airfield more than offsets the problem of figuring out where to park.

I did a couple of flights moving Agnes from Doctor to Doctor and I want to say both, but at least one had an ambulance waiting for me. It was at Hilo and I could see where I needed to head to.

Hmmm, maybe that one does... I only did one medevac because the only Maule landings where I don't hear complaints from the PAX are on cargo-only runs. :Frustrated:

I simply press N... You could park wherever you want to and just pretend that's your destination, but if you really want to end the mission officialy and get the points, you usually need N. On small airports you can often park in the right spot by simply guessing. Or by accident.

BTW When you press N on the ground (to get to the runway and to get to the parking spot) you still get your points for not skipping during flight! You won't get a penalty for skipping on the ground! I quite often press N to get to the right runway and N to get to the parking spot. It's a small price to pay to get a lot more immersive and fun flights!

I finally edited my .CFG file and flying without the marker was awesome! I flew a medical flight from Kalaupapa to Honolulu Intl with a small detour to pick up the VOR aerocache. Nothing sharpens the mind like having to rely only on your radio stack, a home-made chart and six gallons of fuel. :Whew:

Couldn't see the ambulance once on the ground so I had to rely on the N key but I can live with that. The one downer is that I also enjoy scenic flights, which are impossible to do without the destination markers. For what it's worth I did my bit and emailed MSF support about a toggle function.

And Don... the screen shots are great!

That is very good to know, I did not realize that. It was frustrating for me when I would start a job and be parked about a mile and a half away from the runway. Thanks for the tip.

Ok, I just did a medevac job to Hilo and can confirm that there was an ambulance there waiting for me on the GA ramp, where the Nurse said it would be right after we landed. Interesting. It didn't occur to me to grab a screenshot until after I'd shut down, of course. :Phbbbt: As soon as the Job ended, the ambulance was gone.

This demonstrates that MS already has the code in place to provide scenery-object indicators for where to park when doing Jobs. Now, if only they'll provide suitable objects for the other Jobs... Figure a passenger van (or golf-cart on the small fields) for PAX Jobs, a tug pulling a flatbed cargo trailer (or a pickup truck on the small fields) for Cargo Jobs and a car (or the golf-cart again, on the small fields) for Burger Runs. Always a golf-cart for the Bi-plane Tours, though a car would work. I think suitable object models are already in the game for all except the golf-cart as static objects around airfields.

Or, maybe a roach-coach for Burger Runs?

A verbal comment from the copilot or pax ("They are waiting for us on the GA ramp" for example) to point us in the right direction at bigger fields does help, too.
