May 2, 201214 yr Anyone who looks out at the top of the RV's wings can't help seeing strange little vanes sticking up from it. I'm guessing they are either reducing drag, changing the wing's stall characteristics, or increasing lift, but would be interested to hear what they really do (in real life) and are they a common feature on wings...
May 2, 201214 yr They are vortex generators, and good guessing! http://en.wikipedia....ortex_generator They can be installed for a few purposes, but improved handling at low speeds is usually the desired benefit.
May 2, 201214 yr Author Now I know what a vortex generator is... For some reason I was thinking 'turbulator', but when I looked that one up the result (earlier separation of laminar airflow) seemed unhelpful... Cheers
May 3, 201214 yr If anyone remembers the original Q2, it had a canard airfoil (called the "GU") that made its owners think twice before flying it in rainy conditions, or when a lot of bugs had impacted on the canard leading edge and had not been cleaned off. Someone decided to add vortex generators to the top-forward area of the canard, and it ended up saving the day for the early builders of the Q2.
